good shot of the boat. He'll probably lose the Best In Show

I decided to drive up to Bristol RI, to visit the Herreshoff Marine Museum... while not exactly part of the WBS, I thought you'all would enjoy them.
Here is the catboat Sprite, the oldest boat in the Herreshoff collection.
N.G. Herreshoff calculated the offsets on this when he was 12 years old,
taking them off a half model (I'm guessing) his father made.

There's a lot of proof that great minds think alike in the pictures that will be put up here, I'm sure. Some of the sights were attractive enough that I'm sure a bunch of us will go home with similar shots. Here are a few that haven't been posted yet. More from me, and other's too, later.
Of everything that you could do here, little was better than hanging at the WBF club house and just meeting the gang. We are family. If you ever doubt that, you need to come to one of these events and see what an amazing group we are together. I have yet to meet a single person here I didn't feel complete warmth towards and great familiarity with. A truly remarkable group; you want to throw your arms around everyone. Scot really too care of us, too. I got my lobster and how, but it came, rather oddly with five heads. More on that later. You have to do this at least once in your life if you read these pages. You really do.

I managed to wrangle an invitation from fellow Forumite Jonathan Kabak. He's the former Master and current Port Captain of the Lettie. Thanks again from all of us Jonathan. Hope to see you on the Hudson one of these days.

Forum member Liam English (Whiffle) and Judy designed this boat with Paul Gartside http://gartsideboats.com/catpow.php#143 and built her over the past two years in Vermont at Geoff Kerr's Two Daughters Boatshop and their home. They plan to use her for cruising Lake Champlain and, if all goes well, the canals of Vermont, New York and Canada, then the Seaway to Nova Scotia, New England and return via the Hudson.
We've been friends for twenty some years and they kindly listed me as 'crew' so I had a place to rest my head.

It was nice to see so many Forumites at the Oyster Shack and Abbott's for dinner.
The exhibits at the Seaport that I enjoyed the most (and new since my last visit years ago) were the National Rowing Hall of Fame, The Olin Stephens II Library (fantastic old film clips of him and his brother) and The Story of America and the Sea building.

Suzanne and I made it down to Mystic on Sunday, too late to meet Mickey and Lew, much to my regret. We did get to meet Kasey, Phil, and Vince. Always a pleasure to meet in real life. It was great to drive into town and see Airlie all dressed.
As ever, too many boats to see. I loved the Dragon, looks fast on a trailer! Holli Bauer's Nutshell was great, loved the purple sheer strake. Some other highlights were the Rowing Hall of Fame and the Olin Stephens exhibit. The multi hulls on display were wonderful for their range of design and purpose. I'm not sure I appreciated the simple elegance of the Wharram designs and the grace of the Jim Brown designs before I saw them in the flesh. I got close enough to shout to Jim Conlin as he sailed by.
We rented the Dion Dory from the livery and had a pleasant row around the show from the waterside. The Dion is big(18'?) and the 9' oars make it easy to move. Not a speedy rowboat but very capable and comfortable.
Rueben Smith was there with a 1911 Fay and Bowen launch. Beautiful work, and the single cylinder Albin has a great sound.
We stayed around until the Mystic crew fired up the big engine at the hoop makers shop at 4:45. This was the first time I'd been there when they cranked it over. "check the lubrication, fill the gas tank, set the throttle, compression release on" Then spin the big(BIG!) 300 lb flywheel by hand, engage the compression and it starts to build RPM with a "whockita-whockita" Great fun!
Pictures when I get them uploaded.

Great minds think alike, and the early bird catches the worm. So I won't be replacing too many previously posted images (yes, I too have a picture of the motor in the Fay and Bowen launch and details of Concordia's brilliance, as well as of Brilliant herself). Much of what I have has been well covered already. Here are a couple of shots of the same best boats from yet another slightly different perspective.

And after.
Lindy and I are still on the road, about 30 miles out of Providence at the moment, and slowly working our way to New Jersey, where we drop the car (what a turd it has been. Avis gets a letter.) and fly on to Nashville.
Yesterday we were in Newport, visited the IYRS, saw The Breakers, and and drove on to spend the night on the Cape. We went to Woods Hole to see my oldest daughter Heather and her husband Dino and their boys. Dino is a research biologist who was staying at the Research facility's quarters visiting with some fisheries guys (one from Seattle, in fact) who he is friendly with. We visited them where they are staying in the cabins that are set aside for visiting people working on various projects. Interesting little interlude.
We kicked around in Wood's Hole for the day, and drove here this afternoon, having detoured in New Bedford and Providence just to do a Cook's tour of those places. We were too late for the Whaling Museum so we just pushed on.
What a thrill it was to meet everyone. Not enough time with David Tew or Ed Harrow so we have a reason to come back. Everybody was great and of course it's a laugh to put faces to the names. I want to name everyone we met and say how great you all were to the man (and woman) and how warm and wonderful it is to be a part of this great circle, but that risks leaving somebody out. For those who haven't experienced this, it's important to convey how conected we all are. It's as if we all grew up in the same small town, went to school together and married into each others' families. It is a special thing we have here. A very special thing.
Woodenboat recognizes the special nature of the forum, and set aside the clubhouse that Joe was wise enough to capture for you to see in his photos. Just sitting there as the breezes rolled through, out of the sun and in our own special place, chatting and laughing with all was the highlight of the event for me. Everything else was icing on the cake. I didn't take too many pictures, although I played with my new camera a great deal:D. There really was no motivation for me to take serious pictures, the shutters were clicking away everywhere. This was an ephemeral event, a special moment that was as well savored in the moment as a good glass of wine (or a Dark and Stormy).
You had to be there. You ought to be there, if only once.

Great house, and an air-conditioned shop! How do they deal with the dust! Thanks..... Dust.... Ah yes.... Dust.... It's an outside AC unit, so it never sees the saw dust. It does get subjected to pollen and such, but it's not likely to be running when the trees are dumping pollen anyway. It only gets used a few days a year in July, and Agust. I just turned it on for a few minutes on the day of the EBS to get the damp out of the air because I knew that Hugh, and someone else (Turned out to be ELF) would be sleeping out there.

I think that Nat Herreshoff always referred to the boat's waterline length, not the length over all, or length on deck as we tend to do today. The guy at the museum said that was because Nat felt that was the only measurement that really mattered (I kind of doubt that he felt that way, but you get the idea!)

Re: Post 99: Burgess was the same, as I found out in the Library on Friday - all the plans showed the length on the water line, and the boats built on the Ninette design plan all showed 42' but were actually in the 51 to 53 foot range on deck. From what I could tell, though, their hulls and keels were identical. The main differences were in cabin plans, etc.
Thank you Michael and SchoonerRat - I was having a lot of trouble trying to figure out how to make the new camera work - which is why there are so many shots of the same thing over and over. ... and after all that? I STILL don't know how the darn thing works!
Rat, I got heat stroke and sun poisoning over the weekend - it may be a while before I feel like writing again. But thank you for being interested!
New link: http://www.kaseyd.com/mystic/saturday (http://www.paradox1.info/mystic/saturday)
Please note - I was delirious on Saturday from the heat stroke - and that's why my only pictures the whole day were of Scot - under a tent, out of the sun! I was literally too weak to hold the camera. Later in the day, there was a bit of a breeze, and (of course!) right when the show was closing for the night, a nice cool fog rolled in.
Wow! I know I wasn't exactly in pure salt water, or even very near the ocean - but I could taste the salt in the cool breeze as the fog came in - as sick as I was, that was the most beautifully rank smell!

... and I hope someone tells me who all these people are that I've been taking pictures of in my delirium! Feel free to take the smaller copies and copy and paste them into this thread with captions - I think that part's better left to the long-timers! And have fun with it, too - that's what they're there for!
Okay - a warning to all - pics from Sunday DO include an inflatable rubber dinghy - after the museum/show closed for the weekend, we wanted another look around from the waterfront.
Pics from Monday are straight up tourist pics having no relation whatsoever to the WBS, except for a couple boats which were either stragglers or had docking privileges at Seaport.
The titles in the album will tell the story, so if you don't want to be bothered, consider this fair warning!

Loved the photos of The Voyage of The Rubber Ducky!
Kasey
07-04-2008, 06:43 AM
.... I loved the Rubber Ducky too - laid back, feeling that strong cool breeze coming off the ocean, watching the tide go out, debating with my son over which one would "win" (which way they would pull/push us) - and it was pretty exciting too, because neither of us could sit up straight in that $40 float.
The "oars" were these real light plastic screw-together pieces that kept coming unscrewed so my son would have to stop rowing and screw them back together - when he pulled good long strokes, they would bend. We were worried that we'd lose our oars (or pieces of them!) and end up trying to paddle against the tide with no way to really sit up - or that we'd start to leak (don't you just LOVE Wal-Mart!). My son asked if salt water always smelled this bad, or did it get better out at sea - I told him that it was part fresh water, and maybe that was the reason he didn't like the smell - but I personally LOVED the smell! Must have taken me back to childhood - how long has it BEEN since I saw the tide pulling the water around a piling????
The only two hard things about it were -
1) sis wouldn't come, she stayed on shore.
2) When we came back, I had no way to get out - They insisted on pulling the boat up to shore so they could keep a grip on me - but then I couldn't stand up in the boat because the launch ramp there was rough concrete - it would have ripped a hole in the boat - so I had to sort of roll out of it like a big old whale.
I must say, that was about the funniest thing I did all weekend - where were the cameras THEN?

Looking at the show awards, I see that "Gabriel" took first place in the Sail - Owner Restored category. She is Sam Crocker design #327. Whampoa is design # 330 and the two boats are the ones on the cover of Sturgis Crocker's book about his father's designs.

I always wondered why our wooden boat festival is so late in the year. Would be much better if it was in the summer and not the end of Sept.
There are many shows, opening days, fleet blessings, and a general need to get work done at the early part of the year, so you don't want to schedule a conflict or rush the program. Any weekend in June signals the timing of an already scheduled event. Then, in mid season, everyone is "gone fishin'." But PT has that last weekend all to itself. The cruisers are mostly home, and the alignment with Victoria works. And around here, September signals the beginning of winter work. It makes sense to me; minimal conflict, maximal attendance.

And the best , or the best chance of , good weather all 4 days.
Although it did try and rain two years ago early in the day Sat IRRC.
I've seen Sea fair events washed out in early Aug. so I think weather is one of the factors as well as all of Lew's factors.

Doing pictures is a bit of work; after doing that work having ~250 view them with nary a comment, not even 'your pictures stink' - I figured there was little reason to tie up WoodenBoat's servers with six posts. So I got an email; I came to repost them, and I see that perhaps, unusual for me, I was a bit hasty.
Sorry for my fit of pique.

Outstanding photos! Thanks for reposting them! (I like the Pyrate shots!)
Now, for a lubberly question:
Ed identifies one of the shots as "The Dragon" , and I've seen Bamamick and others post about "Dragons" as well. THAT'S PURTY! I think I'm in love....
I confess, I thought they were talking about those quasi-Chinese paddled boats which have clubs everywhere there seems to be a large puddle, but THAT there picture sure wasn't anything like a "paddled" boat!
Any attempt to find info on this on Google produces lots of sites with sweaty people with sticks in their hands... someone rescue me from my pit of ineptitude?

Vince, that boat is a Dragon class day-sailor. Pretty much lightweight, good for racing which they do as a one-design. Low freeboard, beautiful, shapely long skinny thing that flies.

Ed Harrow, I don't suppose we've ever met - but I heard your name several times while I was at Mystic, and each time, it rang a bell in my head - like I knew that name from somewhere. Do I know someone else with that name - or was something telling me I was supposed to know you?
Then I came home, and glanced through what seemed like hundreds of threads with thousands of pictures about Mystic and some other boat shows, until everything started running together. I took a break from the computer after I got all my pics uploaded, and after a few days, when my head was clear, I came back to look at the WBS thread.
What???? The mysterious Ed Harrow, who was an ethereal presence at Mystic, had again disappeared. Maybe it's odd that someone as new as I am would notice - but like I said, there was just something about your name.
Now everyone whined ... and I watched, wondering if a total stranger should email a request to you, or join in the clamor ... but today, I came back again, and there you were.
I took my time today, because of the mysterious Ed Harrow, and went through every single picture and every single caption and every single comment on this whole thread. I was afraid that maybe someone else would find something else to do with their picture storage space, that I might miss something else.
So now I'm going to make it a point - thanks so much to Tabitha, Allan, Lew, Michael, Joe, PaulandSharon, Dave, Elf, Phillip, rbgarr, Steven, Vince, Adam, Cris, Jim Conlin, Russ, and, of course, Ed. To those of you whom I was fortunate enough to meet, your pictures brought me closer to knowing you. To those of you whom I was unable to meet this year, your pictures have given me a little insight into what you're about, and I look forward to possibly meeting you next year. And to all of you, thank you for sharing your memories, insights, and humor.
So much for pics and captions only, Vince - I hijacked your thread with an essay!!!!

Hmmm, if it was William Harrow - there was two that were some kind of relations - one a Union Brig General (not very good, I gather) and another knicknamed 'The Flying Highwayman'. He was pretty good, I gather, but he still came to a bad end. If your roots go to eastern Mass we might have crossed paths.
