while you're at it, read about one of NZ's finest designers and his inspiration for the 45 ft canting keel boat he built and sailed 50 years ago." The sailing machine".

I'm guessing while I was at it, I also found Y1's boom.

I always thought that that swing keeled boat was developed in part by L F Herreshoff. I guess I was badly wrong there.:o

nooo, you need to read the article.;) LFH proposed the boat in Common sense of yacht design. What was built was Jim Youngs interpretation of it, but the point is, it was built.

Excellent. Nice write-up on the Kittycat - my first racing boat.

the idea of a swing keel came from a design in the 1890's where the rig was connected to the keel and both swung. But just an idea. Jim read about swing keels in Common Sence of Yacht Design by LFH and built it. With a little breeze and no dagger board the design needed tweaking, with a steady breeze she sailed faster and higher than any other yacht of the day.

Pitty the RNZYS nailed this door shut, just think where we would be if the development had been allowed to progress.
