I'm impressed that you have any time to be on here. Good work, now get back to it.

Is that a Westerbeke? How old? Is it a Yanmar base engine (looks sort of Perkins/Westerbeke).

Nice choice of seacocks, remember to make the floorboards / furniture so they're accessible, and grease them regularly.

What's wrong with the old prop shaft and coupling? Couldn't you just pop that into a bucket with some baking soda and a battery charger and watch that rust disappear? ;)
Excellent paint job Sir Limpsalot! (But you missed a spot right over there directly above the ceter jack stand....) :D

Good eye Gareth!
It is a Westerbeke W-27, as I understand that it is a Mitsubishi based engine. The W-27 was produced from 1980 - 1984 (IIFC).

I've started to clean up the deck fittings (chocks and jib club gooseneck). The fittings had been varnished and painted over the years. The fittings will be cleaned up lightly polished and re-installed.
Hopefully the fittings will develop an nice even brown patina (I have no plans of keeping these fittings polished and shiny).

http://www.aylard.ca/images/deck_fittings.JPG

The prop had been coated with some kind of bottom paint, supposedly to keep the barnacles away (didn't work btw). Most of the paint has been removed at this point.

Since someone asked (I get depressed when I actually make a list).

Phase 1 (pre-launch)
1. Hang rudder
2. Install engine
3. Install chain plates
4. Install chocks and jib club gooseneck
5. Paint cove stripe and scroll work (carvings) on bow and stern
6. Install new batteries

Phase 2 (post-launch)
1. Repair bottom of fore mast
2. Replace spreaders on main and fore mast
3. Install batter charger and battery combiner

Phase 3 (over winter & early spring)
1. Deck repairs
2. Cabin truck repairs
3. Interior
4. Speed and depth instruments

Very nice....

Is the plan to launch, do phase 2 in the water, and then haul for phase 3? (I'd be pretty impressed if you were doing deck and trunk cabin repairs in the water, in Ontario, in winter...)

Yup, haul for phase 3.
There will be lots of prep work over the winter.

Some more pictures

The gold paint has been applied to the bow and stern carvings and the cove stripe. I thinks it looks good enough that I will redo it in gold leaf next year.

http://www.aylard.ca/images/detail_bow.JPG
http://www.aylard.ca/images/detail_stern.JPG

The copper flashing on the back of the keel has been fabricated and applied. I believe that the purpose of the flashing is to keep marine grown from fouling the rudder.

Gold leafing turned out to be a pretty cool DIY project.

You will love doing the cove stripe, you will hate doing those hootchie cootchie curly q's... Believe me, by the THIRD time I taped off Sarah's moon, I was beginning to get it down... :(

There is a thread around here titled "Gold Leafing for Dummies" (DAMHIKT :D)

Don't try it on a windy day (DAMHIKT either ;)).

If you do insist on leafing on a windy day, you will get to enjoy flecks of gold leaf on every surface within a dozen feet for years to come. :o

Tape off the curly-q thingies:eek:, you've got to be kidding:confused:, that would take years:(. No way, I'm even thinking about taping off all those curly-qs:eek::eek:.

There's got to be a better way.

Allan, many years ago I watched a bookbinder put gold leaf on a binding at the Folger Library in Washington DC. This guy had lots of little tricks to do very intricate designs more or less freehand.

Maybe there's a bookart or specialty bookbinder nearby that might have some leads?

Margo --- the curlicues on Sarah were worth it -- the pictures were beautiful...

Forget about trying to tape around the scrolls. Several ways to acheive your mission, depending on the paint job right now. On good paints, I use lowtack masking tape, strips all across the scroll and then take a razor knife and cut the inlay areas out. Also you can use packing tape and do the same, which sticks a bit more to the painted surface.

There is also green painters tape that we purchase at the local hardware stores, great stuff and cheap and used in houses and will not pull latex paints along house trim or mouldings. This tape will cut with a razor knife and leave a very clean edge.

The rudder was installed on Monday. The engine, new prop shaft and propeller and raw water seacock for the engine have been installed.

Tomorrow I will do a rough alignment of the prop shaft and engine, install the cockpit drain lines, throttle and shift cables, cooling water hosess and the exhaust hose.

I should take opportunity to thank Jim Ledger for his tutorial in rudder repairs. Jim, your thread on rebuilding a rudder was very helpful, thanks.

Alan - Very exciting to see another beautiful boat getting close to returning to her element. What's your plan for the seams and checks in the deadwood? In my short time on the forum I've read several posts from folks concerned about whether or not those things will close up on their own boats. Since you'll be hauling for phase 3, this looks like a great opportunity for some before and after pics... Jim

I would expect that most of the seams in the deadwood will close up after being in the water for a few weeks.

I expect they will too; mine always do. What I was wondering is whether you use anything like Slick Seam in 'em to minimize leakage until they close? Or doesn't she leak after a dried-out launch?
