I have been planning to build a boat for the last several years, but have come to the realization that it will be a long time before I will have the time and money to do so. I am now thinking of purchasing an older runabout on which I could take my young family and, at least partially, indulge my love of wooden boats.
I have seen a lot of Thompsons and Lymans that looked to be in fair condition on various websites, but they are generally more expensive than other builders' boats. Is this do to their being superior boats or just popularity? More specificaly, I have noticed some Penn Yan boats which appeared to be in good condition but were significantly less expensive.
I would like any feedback on production runaboats of 16-20 feet which could realisticly be powered by a modern four stroke outboard of 40-60 horse power. I plan to use it on Narragansett Bay with an occasional run around Newport by Dad on exceptionaly fair days
