Hi everyone,

I am new on the WB forum. Does anybody have a plan to made a single scull or know where to find one. Preferably free or downloadable.

Thank you

I seem to remember that Wooden Boat magazine has an article or two on sculls. You may want to search the online index (http://www.woodenboat.com/wbmag/idx/index.html).

Our hosts sell plans for Graeme King's 'Kingfisher', a 22'6" recreational sculling boat. I think there was an article about building it.
WB also sells plans for a similar double by King and other less sporty singles.

I have not heard of plans for a single that would be competitive.

The single sculling boats (that is, rowing shells) that are wooden are/were built with extremely thin planks, in the order of 1/8" or so as I recall, though I'm certainly no expert in this area. The degree of craftsmanship/skill in building these was very high, I'd say. If you can find plans, I'd imagine they would be from long ago. Good luck in your search.

Clark Craft has a recreational scull, 20'X 27" in cold mold or strip plank. Design #870

Graham King's Kingfisher is a good recreational design, though a bit dated.

I have these plans. Mr. Louden is real nice and very helpful. The shell is built like a tank! Very durable, no doubt. I sort of outgrew the design before I built it. It's very much a recreational shell. It has instructions for everything; seat, oars, outriggers, oarlocks.

Also, you may consider CLC's Oxford. Not free plans but reasonable. Easy to build with reasonable performance.

I've rowed the Oxford. A buddy of mine built one a few years ago. Nice boat. The Piantidosi rig is by far the best drop-in unit available. Pricey, but everything rowing is pricey. Glen L has a scull. Joel White has a sculling boat too. All the plans available are for very recreational type hulls. You can get lines for a Uffa Fox shell too, that should be pretty sporty, but you'll have to adapt your own scantlings and building methodologies.

Jean, see the link at the bottom of my post. Im currently building a modified Oxford to get her a little closer to competitive weights in the adult shells. 3mm plywood all around, lighter glass schedule, extremely lightweight fillers, no fasteners, etc etc.

Shes turning out nicely, and should be floating here in 2-3 weeks.

As for truly competitive boats, ones which are a blue-blooded racing boat, you would be hard pressed to find any plans. There is, however, a single set of plans out there for a real-deal go-fast boat:
