I am looking for the designer or builder of the sailboat from the movie IQ. Walter Matthau plays Einstein, tim robbins and meg ryan share the leads. Its a day sailor which looks to be about 20 feet long. Any help would be appreciated. Carney

IIRC it's a Thistle.

I found a clip from the movie online, with about 5 seconds of the boat. It's much bigger than a Thistle, and the foot of the main is laced onto the boom. From the little bit showing in the clip (it's shot from the mast facing aft) it looks like a traditionally-built centerboard daysailer. From the size of the people compared to the length of the cockpit, I'm guessing it's around 20-24 feet long. It has a little raised rail around the edge of the deck, sort of like a short balustrade. No seats or other furniture in the cockpit, you sit on the narrow side decks, or -- like Walter Matthau -- a box sitting on the sole.

I looked at all the Thistle links I could find and they seemed smaller. I am looking for plans for this boat. I have always wanted to build a wooden boat and this would suit my sailing needs perfectly.

The search goes on.

The Thistle is 17 feet and some change. A fun family racer, but a little big and heavy for a racing dingy. They also carry a heavily weighted centerboard.

The boat that rbgarr identified as a Thistle is almost certainly from another movie about a high I Q person, Charles Van Doren. That movie is "Quiz Show," produced and directed by Robert Redford in 1994. The action takes place in the 1950's when (dishonest) quiz shows were the rage. In an interesting touch of authenticity, the Thistle that appears in the movie is a historically accurate "woodie" with an early sail number. I agree with the observation that the boat in "I Q" is 20 plus ft. LOA and is likely a one-off.

Correct. That's the movie I was thinking of.

Coincidentally, I just saw a History channel show about Leo Szilard and Einstein that showed him sailing an H 12 1/2.

Thanks, I am only interested in the movie boat with Einstein played by Matthau.

Einstein himself did sail a good bit and loved to as all accounts support. As well, it is thoroughly agreed that he was a terrible sailor. My understanding is that he simply liked to think uninterrupted for a time. The nazi's confiscated his boat when he left the country.

If anyone comes across the designer or class/name let me know. I like her lines!

Greetings:

Check out the recent Designs/Plans topic Any info on "Fox" (http://www.woodenboat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=85150) . Now that looks more like the boat in the "IQ" movie. Open boat, has a bowsprit and very yar. I too have been curious since a recent viewing of the movie. Looks like its available as plans and a LOT of work.

Portsmouth Yardstick rating 83. One of the fastest racing dinghies in existence.

Great looking boat! unfortunately too deep the keel. I live on a lake where the lake is drained nearly ten feet each fall. thanks though.
