So happens that this weekend fellow called me about an old hull that was sitting around and ask me if these boats could substitute for a flats boat. So self says why not, lets go for it!

Chuck there will not be any cammo on this one, even though the boat would fit the criteria for a rugged winter ducker for sure.
FWIW, around this joint numerous fellers will scorn about sandwiched plywood between the forbidden fruit fiberglass satuated with epoxy goop. Yes there are some areas where the boat was banged and neglected but the issues of concern was not because of improper materials and building technigues.
Honduras mahogany and plywood between fiberglass and in perfect condition .

years of white water canoe racing. Slide over a sharp rock and catch the wiff of poly. amazing how that smell passes thru water.
cutting old kayaks in 1/2 to retape the joint
most recently cutting up a dead Oday daisailer into chucks the lanfill crusher would accept.
That smell has lots of fond memories.

I am installing the rubrails, all honduras mahogany. A fellow told me that it looks like its going fifty miles an hour sitting still.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v356/Bateau1/DSC03869.jpg
But another fun part of the reconstruction is to also get to inspect the materials thats been sandwiched between goop.:D Flawless to say the least after all these years. The skeg shows a different color since its cut on an angle with the bow shape to receive the rails foward.

FWIW, anyone keeping track, I fabricated a foward hatch which will keep things dry also in the spirit of the boat with wood. No plastic here. I installed quarterknees in the stern to keep the boat completely open.

Details of the hatch. The lid is also fabricated and will be hinged.

Erster, I'm coming late to this thread. Do I understand it correctly that you built the boat originally and are now modifying it? The cut-down shows that the structure under the glass is in incredibly good shape - like it was built yesterday.

This boat was built nine years ago. I really enjoy going back on some of these builds and see how some of these boat have faired over time under such diverse climates and situations in the hands of others.
This boat was given to me as what the fellow considered to be a lost cause. Well he had let the boat fill up with water over time since he had not used it as his kids had all gotten grown and there was three spots that had gone bad, no different than any other solid planked boat with the abusive disregard of the hull laying out back of a farm shed.
We said what the geck lets start cutting and see if it needs to recieve the proper viking funeral since part of the top above the center longitual had some water intrusion.
The result was that I probably could have salvaged the whole boat if I felt like repainting the outside of the boat. I did not need another open water boat and no one else wanted to mess with it, including a couple of guys here.;):p So the result is that the boat is a great flats or ducking hull now for someone. If not right now, the boat will easily roll over for easy storage until such time that things will come around for some interest in this type of hull.
Funny thing is that there is another hot topic dealing with fasteners around this joint. Several folks have argued numerous times about stainless versus silicon bronze hardware. In small boats both have been used in different building technigues and no two builds are the same. I have in the past provided real time evidence of both types of fasteners after doing some upgrades and the issue has created flame wars.
If you notice the shoulder portions of these screws and some of the tips are in bad shape. These were in a brass rubrail above the waterline. Hopefully the results are apparent in this shot.

I have the inside of the boat spot primed where need be except for a couple of places that will recieve some fairing compound and then the topcoat will be applied.
The hatch fits perfectly and works just fine.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v356/Bateau1/DSC03913.jpg
This is the shot of the new quarterknees that are all througbolted as you can see the counterbore hole and will be touched up.
I glassed the top of the transom and will also get the fairing and paint.

Them there duck critters is gonna see ya coming for sure...you could paint it a medium gray and use it as an elephant sneak boat, or paint the bottom orange and use it to sneak up on storks.......but then again.....I hope the cockpit is at least 7 feetz.....so's ya can rig an awning and take a nap and hide out in the shallows so's the missus dunno where you is or isn't.

Wel you seez here Mr. Chuckles you can gets it any color you wants as long is its green.:D But no thats not the final answer, as the white is the primer of choice, another unmentionable blend for the purists.;) Cream is the order of the day until further notice, deal or no deal?/:p The inside decking is 11 feet fore and aft to the foward step box. So you can also have enough space for your wheel chair and your bedroll.:)
Doug, engine size depends on how fast you want to go, beginning with a nine hp and going up to a 25 which would be fine. A 40 hp will be the order of the day since thats what I have for my fish boat and will seatrial it with the same one for now.
Bill fishing today got blown out after we got to the ramp. Out of nowhere the winds came up and mamma said go home. The weather bunny missed it for sure. As far as the projects, while many folks are saying "What, are you nuts?" I am saying why not? Every boat that came before us all thats here had to have someone say "Why not" when it came to a need or likes or some wild hair. So thats how I look at all mine every time I get the itch. Challenges are good for the mind and soul, or so I think anyway.

I have installed a temporay console with a suicide knob on it to steer from the top with a small side slatted seat behind it until I can get a new one painted and installed. The deck is also clean and unobstructed.
The boat in the tent is a Simmons awaiting for a home.;)

The only fish that maybe in the boat if launched would be flying fish with the 20 to 30 knots of winds both for the past four days and the up and coming days until maybe monday of next week if the weather bunnies are correct. I may have to wonder deep into Duclin's waters to run and fish it right now.

I got the boat in the water today after the nasty weather has past and ran it. I did not get any decent shots of it underway except from a distance by a passerby and tried to use the program to crop them and zoom them and failed at it miserbly. Maybe next week I can get my madamn to do some as she knows how the camera works. But anyway, it floats perfect, runs perfect and will do what it was redesigned for. I reinstalled the brass rails, a nice feature for banging the docks and pilings. The boat is incredibly stable when walking around the boat's inside.
