Anyone with any experience sailing or owning a Stone Horse? The design has come up on my radar and I am curious about the characteristics of the boat.

Thanks

A friend has owned for lots of years. It's rumored to be the prototype for the Cal 25, sharing some of the same layout. His main problem, ultimately, was simple lack of room--including interior headroom. The boat always sailed well, handled lots of weather, etc. He ended up buying a glass, trailerable, cruiser. The Stone Horse is still for sale.

Great little cruising boat! The raised deck makes the interior space livable and adds strength. Very comfortable cockpit. Reefed down she'll take what comes in stride and get you home safely. Sam Crocker designed several variations. I like the Edey & Duff version in that other material. Only problem for me is that it's tough to squeeze in an engine, at least in the 23' version; the boomkin complicates outboards. But she sails well enough to get by without an engine, and in a flat calm she can be rowed. Small is beautiful.

It is highly doubtful that the full keel heavy displacement Stone Horse was ever considered the prototype for the light weight Cal 25. The flush deck is the only similarity and that was around for a few hundred years before either of these boats were thought about. Bill Lapworth and Sam Crocker would get quite a laugh out of this:-)

I owned a Stonehorse for five years. She was a wonderfully balanced boat that was a joy to sail. There are faster designs out there but none more well behaved and pleasant. I would be happy to answer specific questions.

The Stone Horse is about 500 lbs. heavier than the 4,000-lb. Cal 25. It's not what I would call heavy displacement--the one I am familiar with lives on a trailer. It is full keel, and a tad narrower. The similarities are mainly the flush deck and interior, although the Cal 25 has considerably more room below. In the water they look quite similar.

I've always liked this picture of the Stone Horse – very salty!
