View Full Version : A scow for Dave

I took these photos on saturday specifically for Dave Fleming because we've always had long chats about the working scows of Erie and how they influenced the NZ coastal scow, the workhorse of the 1800's and early 1900's here.
Jane Gifford was the subject of a few early posts and threads of mine ( lost photo links now)but she nearly didn't make it. A pragmatic restoration/ rebuild has been taking place over the last few years though and hopefully she'll make it to the water this season.

Good one John.
I've been meaning to try and get some photos and post them on here, but haven't got around to it. Work on Jane has slowed a lot in recent months, although the mechanical fit out is progressing, and the majority of the spars are ready. Looks good doesn't it?
http://www.janegifford.org.nz/ gives more details and pictures of the restoration/rebuild, an enormous job.

We hope it cheers Dave lots! It looks grand from here. Is that the centerboard trunk? Great spot!

Jane Gifford is a boat which looks absolutely purposeful (in a most attractive way)!

Yeah, not bad. Have you been up the river at all John? Lovely run. Must make a proper cap for Kapanui's funnel ones of these days, that fish bin looks terrible, wrecks quite a nice funnel.

:D
Johnny G and I tried to take little Thelma up there one weekend but kept hitting the putty, so we bottled out and went back down to scots for a soothing rum. IIRC.
Must have been really tight getting Sealestial up there.

No way, its not as bad as people think, local knowledge is the key. On a spring tide you can get 9 foot draft to the town wharf, Sorceress lives at the Cement Works marina, and comes and goes happily on normal tides with 7'6" draft. I've got in in Romo at less than half tide, and we bounced in in Kapanui once at low tide (neap). Robertson's regularly have quite large vessels in the yard, so its not an issue. if you ever need a pilot, give me a yell. What does Riada draw?

Dad's had Mischief up to the wharf a couple of times but he borrowed local guidance for the trip down on a failing tide.
He bounced without them on the way up but with an incoming tide thats not a big deal.
I've also been on Maggie at the wharf as well.

Ahh yes Zane, I was the one who took your father down the river that time, quite a number of years ago now. Mischief is a great boat, and we had nice sail down harbour and around Saddle Island. I've fond memories of that trip down river.

Hi Daniel,
Good to hear from you. Dad's still sailing around in Mischief. Will be back for the 09 Marhurangi regatta I expect.
Did you get some sailing down the river or motoring.
Now I'm up north I don't get out as often as I did when I was in Auckland on her. Still may get an overnight in during the School holidays next week if all go's to plan. We have promised my 2 boys that we will get them a fish out around the merc's.
If you are running any Hydraulics on the Jane feel free to give me a call if you need some advice.
Cheer's

Thanks Zane.
I don't know if Jane will have any hydraulics, but if it does, Peter will be doing a good job of them, as he's a bit of a hydraulic expert. Peter owned cranes up until just before he started the Jane project, so knows all the right people, and manages to call on all the right equipment when it is needed.
Have fun on Mischief, the Mercs are a great place to play. I've only been there once, years ago on Swan, but loved the area. You are lucky to have easy access to it in Mischief, it s a bit of a hike from here.

'local knowledge'.. That would be the key.;)
Riada is about 7 ft deep and she's been in Robertsons before now, I believe thats where she was repainted last and she might have gone there every couple of years for her maintenance. I took a photo of her there back in the 90's sometime.
Does Peter just keep Sorceress at the works through winter and then shift her to the Scotts mooring for summer?

Ahh, well 7 feet draft means you need to know the channel, but if you do, its not too bad.
Peter has kept Sorceress at the Cement Works on and off over the years, its only recently come back up the river after a couple of years on the mooring, so I don't know if he has a set arrangement. I rather suspect its a matter of cost and convenience, if theres no money in the kitty, you put up with the mooring, otherwise being able to walk along the marina to the boat is quite good.

As this was the last thread to feature Jane Gifford, I'm going to give it a bump. The reason being is that launch date has finally been set, 16th of May being the day. Don't know a lot of details as yet, but the river will be closed off to modern boats, the vessel will be launched and then a parade of trad boats will run up to Warkworth townwharf. Will try and get some pics this weekend, she's looking good.
