My crew and I were there this spring. Just a beautiful place....We went in May and the only thing I regret is the fact that the grass had not yet turned green. Lots of returning seabirds and shorebirds, also quite a few wooden boats. I just haven't gotten the skill of posting pix.

I have hundreds of color slides and B/W negatives I shot in Iceland back in '69-'70. The landscape is truly exquisite and otherworldly. I bought a scanner to digitize them but it didn't work. If anyone can suggest a reasonably priced and reliable negative-slide scanner I would love to get my old pictures uploaded to my PC and/or Mac.

Define "reasonably priced" :-)

Also, do you want a new one or a used one would be fine? Tons of people bought them a few years ago as they were switching from film to digital -- but once you scan your slides and negatives you don't need one any more... Scanning is a hassle, though.

I don't mind used and I would probably be willing to spend between 1 and 2 hundred bucks. What would it cost to pay a photo shop to scan a couple hundred slides or negatives?

Speaking of used, I have a friend who scanned his several years ago I think I'll see if he wants to get rid of his scanner.

BTW--great photos, Kaa, here and on the other thread. You saw parts of the coastline I never saw. Most of my photo excursions were to the interior.

Well, there are several things to keep in mind.

The first thing is the scan resolution and quality. Lots of places will do a quick-and-dirty scan of your negs/slides for cheap. Unfortunately, the quality sucks. There are also places that will carefully drum-scan your negs and provide excellent resolution, dynamic range, and color fidelity. Unfortunately, they are expensive :-)

The second thing is dirt and scratches. There's LOTS of both on years-old slides and negatives, and getting rid of them is a big pain in the ass. Better scanners have the auto-get-rid-of-dust capability (it has to do with additional scanning in the infrared channel) which makes life easier. It's still a major hassle.

Figure out your needs -- mostly whether you anticipate making large prints and whether you care about niceties of color and shadow detail -- and that should point you in the right direction.

Off the top of my hand, a used scanner should be cheaper than paying someone to scan a couple of hundred pieces of film -- but scanning also requires time. It's not a very fast process.
