My first real sailing experience!

So I've been out a bit in a 16' peapod. So today I was offered the opportunity to go out sailing. Our good family friend Doug is the proud owner of Irene, Concordia Yawl #103. I was flattered to be invited out. We were out for about 3 hours, in about 15 knot winds. it was fantastic.
Being at the helm with the tiller in my hand was down right terrifying. I really wasnt expecting the boat to heel over that much. I did NOT want to be the guy who tips over a Concordia Yawl! AAHHH! but doug was ok. He did start saying rather emphatically to pull on the tiller. but with the gunwale in the water, I was about freaking out too!

So anyway, it was a great experience. Learned a lot, and had a great time. Can't wait to get our project, a 31' ketch, back in the water so I can become proficient.

Different boats different events. A Concordia is not going to capsize. Period.

Sail on many different boats and learn how they diversly behave. It's fun.

Congratulations! there is NOTHING in this world like having a good boat in a fair wind with her sails up and set tight, the tiller thrumming in you hand, feeling her every shift and stretch thru your feet as she lifts and falls on the seas....

For a first real sailing experience, you've pretty much done OK. :) ;)

Frankly, it may be downhill for the most part as Doug is a gentleman as well as a yachtsman of the highest order. And IRENE isn't just Bristol, she's a testament to the ongoing love and care these fine boats deserve.

In a small way I'm glad IRENE isn't on this coast as SARAH has enough competition with the always-Bristol ABACO.

It was truly an honor to get to sail with Doug. He did mention the spars. When he bought Irene almost 25 years ago, the previous owners had let the varnish go, so they were sound, but not varnishable. It is the one thing he lets slide. However in lieu of the perfect varnish job that would echo the rest of the boat, the paint job is top notch.
