As you know there was a thread about me heading south the 15th.
I have been holding out but I will tell you I had a heart attack. I am going through the testing now and no word yet but apparently its more than just being stressed out. As I have no insurance its going slow but my old Flight surgeon is a cardiologist and has offered to take me on. Testing is from another friend who is a big wig in a hospital in Ma.

My issue now is I have to be off the mooring I am on by the end of October so I have to find a winter mooring for a #5000 LB 26' Boat with a 4' draft. No issues with the boat as it is self powered with the wind genny.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I will be grateful for it and I am hoping to be clear of this soon so maybe I can leave by December.

That sucks! Must have been "milded one"? If any heart attack can be called mild

So they'll "stint" you up ???

We worked on a job last year where a neighbor / community guy would come by and take just about every scrap on the job away. He had a small H /A got some work done , came home felt better so when pretty much right back doing his "normal stuff" within a week, which of course he felt better as he was getting better blood / oxygen flow . BUT he stroked himself out doing it died a couple of weeks later.

Ah $hit, it aways something:( Good luck Mark!

Yoiks! To get a heart attack rather than give one. The good news is that often people who survive a first heart attack get healthier than they were before. Hope that's your case.

I have no good thoughts on a temporary mooring. Turns out the town won't let me lend mine which will be empty from November 1 on.

Sorry to hear that Mark. Hope everything works out ok.

I am just finishing up a book written by a guy from Grand Rapids who had a series of heart attacks and they told him he needed a transplant. He decided to go sailing instead. Pretty good book.

Third!?! Gads! You are a hard case. It may be that starting south in a couple of weeks is just the right thing.

Maybe we can think of a snug anchorage near Boston or along the South Shore with easy access to good transport for your medical visits.

Not to say that the third time is the charm, (or the first or second, for that matter!) but hopefully, things will get better after this one!

Be healthy!

First two were in my late 30's. I ran a big crew in Boston and the stress was killing me at the start of the big dig. I changed my lifestyle and all was good. This one came out of nowhere as I stopped stressing things like before. My kids made me promise to get it seen to so I am obligated to do it.

Mark,

I talked to Kevin, the harbor master. My stuff can stay in until Dec. 31st. If you want to use my mooring which is a five hundred pounder you are welcome to.

You will need to communicate with Mark Smith about when he should switch it over to a spar and remove the buoy and pennants. I've already paid to have that done so it would not cost you anything. You could access it from the shore at Falmouth Town Landing and you may even be able to talk Kevin into allowing it to be moved closer to the shore (that would be cool)....

Call me if you want to look into this further.

I talked to a few people, too, Mark, but didn't come with anything as good as Greg's offer. Most people thought Handyboat would be the best place. That's right where Greg's mooring is.

Thanks for your thoughts and all the help. I am not worried because it takes a lot to knock down a real son of a bitch. I already told the doctor no electronics, no lifetime meds. I will just go sailing and if called I will serve.
My kids are my only concern as I do not want them to worry.

Think happy thoughts.
You never know, it might make a difference.
:)

Mild heart attacks are your lifestyles way of slapping you in the head to get you to pay attention and make necessary changes.

Of all things, I'm glad you were on the hard in this event.

I'm seeing the Portland Harbormaster tonight at a meeting. I'll probe him a bit. Problem is in Portland, there is no harbor. It'd be nice to find something protected for a possible wintering over.
There may be something in the Gut. I'll check with them who knows down there.

Real sorry to hear about this Mark.
I hope it all works out, healthwise first and foremost, and for your mooring needs- and then of course for your Journey.

Keep well,
Hans.

Sorry to hear about that heart attack. You mentioned no meds, but an 81mg aspirin a day doesn't require an Rx, just dedication. It might help.

Sorry to hear about the health issues Mark, I'm already looking forward to the thread you'll write about your travels.

After 3, it is definitely time to look under the hood. But, as always, I also recommend a healthy dose of meditation. If it doesn't help you in this life, it just might help in your next incarnation ;-)

Gee, sorry to hear of your troubles. Seek out some good care which is sometimes hard to find.

Hope you get well soon so you can join us at the woodcutting get together! Hope to see you Oct. 25th even if you are not up to par. At least you can provide the crew with some wisdom! Will all be broke by then.

Mark please take care of yourself. Try to change your lifestyle if possible, eat well , don't smoke, love life, sail much and often.

All the best and hope you can get proper medical care. For the past few months I've been without health insurance but I've been very lucky, no health issues. As of today I have full health insurance thanks to giving up my soul to a corporate job.

Ah..... Well..... The silver lining of all this is that I have a little extra time to get your rain gear and sextant to you! ;) If anyone is headed north going through here towards there, or near here to near there, let me know and I'll burden you down with the stuff... Otherwise I can arrange to ship it to an undisclosed super-secret location....:D
(Glad you survived! What the hell would I do with an X-L set of rain gear anyway?! ;))

If they was 2XL you could sell 'em to me. Mark don't need 'em... that stuff just rolls off his back like a duck, dunnit?

edit:
Speakin' of foul'd weather gear, there was a thread somewhere on here a-ways back about making oilskins... anyone got a clew?

Speakin' of foul'd weather gear, there was a thread somewhere on here a-ways back about making oilskins... anyone got a clew? I'm not positive, but I THINK it was Bob Smalser, and/or Dave Fleming..... Certainly they had a lot of input on the thread.

Mark- sorry to hear. You know where I am in the event of emergency. You have my #, and the phone is on 24/7. Don't ever hesitate.

If you are in a real jam, I may have a couple spots you could stash the boat on the hard for the winter.

Bob Smalser is right.
Bee's wax, pine tar, turps and a bit of I believe it was lemon oil for smell. Check out the search function or just hail call Bob. I am planning on doing it next week if I can find some pine tar locally.

Mark, take care, good luck.

I am feeling Okay, I am taking it easy though. Friday I was with the bridesmaids at my daughters wedding and early in the evening the commotion of everything started to get to me and I had to take a break as I felt it coming on. The rest of the weekend went well after though and I danced a few times at the reception. I had several young women taking care of me :D.
I am supposed to change my diet which isn't easy along with the added costs but I am trying. Doctor has a plan which I am waiting to discuss with him, hopefully this week. Maybe some surgery involved but he is keeping quiet till he see's me. I am supposed to forward all this to my old combat surgeon buddy for a second opinion so its going to be a while before decision time. I will keep you posted but its definitely time to slow down some.

Well the mooring situation is good till dec 31st then I am screwed.
I have use of Gregs mooring until then and another on the Kenebec but have to be off that one in January because of ice on the river.
Steven is helping me onto Gregs this weekend and I will figure it out after. According to the Doc, no chance of leaving until spring so I am still on the hunt. I might be able to afford pulling it out but not sure about putting it back in so its best to leave it in and pull it in the spring for bottom maintence. I am not going to worry about it yet.

Thanks, Steven is helping me move Marla up to Gregs mooring this weekend. Weather looks good but poor wind conditions.
I would have liked to push her a bit but it will have to wait.

Still trying to find a hook for January into Feb. After that Willin is letting me hook on the Kenebec until my mooring is open in the spring.

Well good weather during the move yesterday but a bit cold to start.
We got to Talisman and started to motor over to Marla but a hunk of mooring line got in our way. It wrapped the prop so it was cut loose, sail to the dock, Steven in dry suit.

The wind was heading straight from our destination so we tacked and tacked but about a mile from the new mooring the wind went away. Steven and Talisman took me in tow.
