Mary got out of work early this afternoon and we went for a little sail on Talisman. The wind was good to head up to Falmouth so we sailed around the mooring field there a little. I was curious to see if we could find Dorothy Elizabeth and sure enough we spotted her.

She is my favorite little schooner, just 28' long. Many say she is the prettiest boat Ralph has ever designed and built and that's saying a lot.

The sun was about to set and Mary took a few pics as I circled around her mooring:

Nice little vessel. Designer certainly has done a good job, although my preference would be for a little less freeboard and a bit more rake on the masts. Those things withstanding, its a nice boat, and a lot better than most of what appears to be in that morring area.

I enjoyed Duncan's book about her building. http://www.amazon.com/Dorothy-Elizabeth-Building-Traditional-Schooner/dp/B000FUO0CO/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1223181800&sr=1-7

Amazon has it for $6 now. Do the Duncan's still own her?

I always say the the schooner rig doesn't work well on small boats. This little gal seems to work pretty well. I can see a bit of a problem for "big" people to negotiate the companionway easily but she has a nice hull and the rig seems to balance nicely. How does the interior work? My experience is that it's hard to keep the spars from "chopping up" the interior layout of a small schooner.

You probably would not have liked what I was sailing, but "different ships, different longsplices"

Come on, Gareth, spill. :) What were you sailing?

SR, I've never seen the interior of DE, but I'd love to someday.

Anyone want to come sailing this afternoon?
