View Full Version : A summer in Brooklin

I was fortunate enough to spend a few weeks this summer taking seamanship courses at the WBS on Havilah Hawkins' Vela, Bruce Fowler's Emily Marshall, Andy Oldman's Patience B, and Nat Benjamin's Charlotte. Russ Mannheimer -- who kindly welcomed me to the WBS by inviting me to the SRR's lobster dinner, and introducing me to various Forumites -- urged that I put up some photos. So, with little discrimination (and less explanation)....

First, the WBS on land:

Wow! Fantastic photos! You really have an eye. It was fun meeting up at the SRR, I've been wondering how your stay went.
Feel free to start a thread like this about your boat anytime you want. ;)

Hi Patrick
Did you notice if any of the boats were sporting the new uber chic ' Swanndri by Karen Walker' interiors that are storming the classic fleets world wide ?

Patrick,

Been waiting for these delightful pics. The white skiff in the Charlotte series is Benjamin Mendlowitz's I believe. Trip home uneventful? We'll follow your progress at the site.

Great to have met you and sorry we couldn't get together down here. Went for my first sail today and thought you would have enjoyed it. Timing is everything.

Hope to see you next time you're in the neighborhood.

Best,

Russ

It was, John, and coolest of all was taking on (a reefed) American Eagle in a tacking duel from Vela... and winning!

Great photos, as a long time enthusiast and participant at the WBS, thanks for the on-the-water pictures. A great experience for any who attend, and let's all do our best to keep the place viable.

That's some wonderful scenery and great photography, Patrick. Great thread!

Did anyone else notice the masts on the white yawl in the first picture in post 7? The mizzen looks like a bow set to fire and the top of the mainmast is bowed the same way. Optical anomaly or are they set like that? There are other masts in the pic and they are all straight.

You've got quite an eye for the camera.

I don't think the mast bend is an optical illusion. I've seen lots of Ketches with significant rake induced by tight backstays/triatics, especially ones with hollow wooden masts.

I was just observing that the current maximum daily temperatures in each Brooklin ME and Wellington NZ seemed to be the same. Presumably (and hopefully, at least at my end) that is soon to change.

Spring down here is marked by wildly unattractive wind and horizontal rain. The Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club's very groovy weather website
http://www.rpnyc.org.nz/files/weather/
records windspeeds of 20-30 knots for most of last month, gusting to 70 knots! Mmmmm.

Progress on Rogue is slow, although you'll see here
http://www.classicyacht.org.nz/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=7&thread_id=18&rowstart=76
that Bruce Askew (the architect) has spent his NZ winter fashioning a perfect 1/15th scale model of the final product.

Matt Price (the boatbuilder) has some catching up to do! But there's no criticism: his painstaking work is just going to be magnificent, good for another 120 years.
