Here are some shots from this years Small Craft Festival at St. Michael's, sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.
First two are from the sailboat "race," which lacked one essential ingredient. But the ambiance was perfect.

Also, a link here to a video shot by my son.

And here, a shot of a very small portion of the boats at the docks. The banana looking whisp is mine.

Not from the small craft festival per se, but here's a neat picture I found of the harbor at Saint Michaels in what appears to be the late 19th century...

More shots to gaze upon. Great weather overall. Decent wind, except for during the sailing 'race'. Lots of great boats of all flavors.

Everything about this boat seems right. I had to stop and have another look every time I walked by. It's even weathered and worn just so.

Thanks, nice photos from everyone. Honestly, it's hard to take a bad photo with so many gorgeous boats everywhere you turn.

That was indeed a dad teaching his son to row. That series of shots went on for several more. The nice thing was they were both obviously really enjoying it. I'm sure some of you know how rare that is.

This is working for me:

Yes that captures the fast and furious action of the race. Phil

ha ha!!
It was the lug sail that gave it away, definately not a traditional American sail mabey on some eccentric yachties small boat or mabey a sailing canoe but certainly not on a working waterfront! then I noticed the modern (fiberglass?) sailboat in the far-foreground with dark hull and high aspect marconi rig...my guess is if it's St. Michales (I don't know the harbour) it's a photo from an early small craft meet or some such, mabey the 70's some time.

About that 19th century photo. It looks like it was taken when the original Amistad visited.

The boat in post #18 is a Crotch Island Pinky made by Peter Van Dine. The hull is fiberglass, but the details are wood. There was one listed for sale in MAIB a month or so ago, moored in Dexter, NY.

Last year, a Van DIne Tancook Schooner was present.

Don't be too quick to jump on the lug sail as a "giveaway." According to Chapelle when "Seneca" and others started playing with sneakboxes as a recreational boat in the late 19th century they experimented with different rigs, including the lug. And St. Michaels has long been more than a "working" waterfront -- it has a long history of recreational boating. For instance, the Star Class was raced there in the 1920s, and one Star sailor from St. Michaels -- C. Lowndes Johnson -- created the Comet class in 1932.

Besides, look at the brimmed hats the guys in the lug-rigged boat are wearing! Not your typical 1970s boating garb.

Wox, thanks for the video. Funny how a still picture just can't convey how still it was.

Capt. Tony took me on as a dead weight - er, passenger - on his beautiful new melonseed. The race was a hoot. When the starting gun went off it was so quiet everyone just sat there in stunned silence. Until, that is, crews began clawing their boats to the front of the pack hand over hand on the railings of other boats, and wrestling matches broke out between boarding parties.

I think we should start a new race format, where every boat has to deposit a crew member onto another boat, and take on a new crew member in exchange, at at least once before the race is over.

Well, I think that this has gone on just about long enough...

Here's a picture I took Saturday afternoon, some time after the late 19th century:

http://www.mars.asu.edu/~jdrake/IMG_8638c.jpg

As there are almost nothing but sailing vessels visible in the frame, and mostly traditional-looking ones at that, I figured that it was probably a scene somewhat similar to the way the harbor might have looked back then. The square-rigged Amistad contributes substantially in that regard.

I liked that notion so much that I decided to photoshop it. I was surprised by how well the result turned out, so I decided to post it here to see if anyone would notice. Except for the dirt and blurring, the only thing I changed in the scene itself was the addition of the two hats and the erasure of a modern logo from the back of a T-shirt.

That's my dad and little brother in the pram, BTW. My girlfriend and I were following in our own. In fact, the photo immediately preceding my original post shows us coming into the harbor in the background, probably taken at most a few minutes after this one.

As great as the boats were, the other thing that keeps me coming back are the people. After ten or so years I have made quite a few friends that I only see once a year at the Festival. There are some years, and this was one, when the boat doesn't leave the roof rack because I get more satisfaction from associating with old and new friends.

Nice work! The hats were a splendid touch. You had me going for a while ... I was scratching my head trying to figure out just how early a high-aspect marconi rig might have shown up at St. Michaels. (They started using them on Star-class boats as early as the 1920s.)

I attended the 2008 Small Craft show in St. Michaels, MD and took a lot of individual photos of the boats.

If any of you are looking for inspiration, take a look at my album on Photobucket.com. Great show ..fabulous weather! There are over a hundred fifty images. Note that there are multiple albums: for sailboats, pulling and power boats. Navigation is on left.

Please do copy not use for any commercial purpose. If you see your boat and would like a hi res photo, you may contact me.

Hope you enjoy them!
