soon I will be pulling the engine from Milky Way. She has fifty years of grease build up under the engine and all around the bilge area below the engine.
Since I will pull the engine and then get started on other projects prior to dropping in her new engine I thought about something I read on WBF. Then I got to thinking it might be just what I could use so here it is:
are there enzymes or something that I could spray on all of the areas and "let them do the work so I dont have tooooooooo ?"
I believe there is something used for oil spills that basically ingest the oil/grease and wala...
Does anyone know more about this or know where I can get more info and even buy some? And would it work over the winter in very cold temps ie 35 to 0 for several months?

Do you really mean grease, or do you mean engine oil, or diesel, or ? The chemicals for dealing with these are rather specific....
Easy answer is to (carefully) use a standard de-greaser like Simple Green or one of the more industrial-strength products == but these are not the enzymes that work over time.

Good luck with that :(
Sarah's bilge was out of the water, dried for 7+ years, saturated with CPES, half replaced as to planks, frames, and floors, plus painted with red lead and even after all that! oil floats to the top of the water that pools under the engine... :(:(
I keep those oil sopping diaper things in there, but still expect the marine patrol to haul me away every time the bilge pump runs... :(

Google "bilge cleaner eats oil". Lots of ideas - never tried any of 'em..

I saw a guy spraying something on all the oil spots at the gas station next to me here recently. He said it was indeed some sort of digesting oil enzyme or something. I forget the name, but remember him saying it was extremely expensive. Ask your local gas station person...
I used paint scrapers followed b y a shopvac. Every square, 75 year old, inch. 50+ hours at least.

if it dried grease.. Try scraping those cruds loose into a bucket first before you start dumping engine de-greaser down in there..
kerosene or diesel fuel are the best heavy grease cutter.. then follow-up with steam cleaner like one used for removing wallpapers....
If ya real lazy to do the job, then use "Easy-Off" oven cleaner...

Check the new products from Clean Water Soultions..some type of cells that are implanted in a sponge like material that literally consume and change oil into a harmless by product..usual disclaimers..

Bob - I'll buy Wisk just as a general principal and to keep you employed, but Clean Water Solutions' products seem the best I've seen for my problem (bilge scraped, sealed and painted still extruding oil).
Cheers!

Bill,
do I spray this stuff all over my bilge. I dont quite understand how a sponge is going to release the enzymes throughout my dry bilge while on the hard. Or am I missing the point. Are these like those scrubbing bubbles in my bathtub.
they do all the work so youuuuuu dontttt haveee tooooooooooo ????????????

I think what you need to do is clean and scrape. But as noted above, that's what we did as well as seal and paint (the bilges were spotless when we launched), but for whatever reasons Sarah must have had so much oil satuarating the wood that as water sits in the bilges now, oil leaches back up out of the keel and the <40% of the planks that weren't replaced. :(

IT CAME TO ME LAST NIGHT as I lay awake trying to get to sleep.
In preparation for the ezymes... I thought too bad the bilge isn't something I could take and put into a parts cleaner. Then I thought; It is a parts cleaner with its own pump and hose.
So here is my question: Would it be safe enough to: fill the bilge (probably a few gallons) with mineral spirits and use the bilge pump but disassemble the hose leading out of the boat and use it as a parts cleaner hose. Also, use a stiff parts cleaning brush and clean all the wood of the oil.
Would the bilge pump ignite the spirits? Actually, mineral spirits is the EXACT same thing as lighter fluid. If you dont believe me next time you run out of lighter fluid go ahead and use some mineral spirits. You'll see and smell that it is the same stuff.
I would think that a bilge pump would not have a spark. Although one is necessary for an electric motor but then wouldn't there be many more bilge explosions if the bilge pump gave spark? Yea, we use a blower but not before each time the bilge pump comes on and on....
Obviously, I couldn't sleep last night. I was up worrying about what this country is going to come to when Obama gets in the white house. Bill Ayers and all his liberal goals... okay you liberal freaks I can hear you now about what Bush has done but remember if you are wrong about all of it we can not afford another term heading in the wrong direction. And that my friends is reason number 1 for McCain.
okay, just stick to my question please...

With such seriously flawed reasoning abilities, it's no wonder you cant even figure out how to clean your own bilge.
But ya, gasoline works as a good cleaning solvent too. Scrub the bilge with it. Then just light it off and all the scum burns away.

Ya, but Dan, why don't you just come out and say how you really feel? No sense holding back.
Regarding greasy bilges...nobody has mentioned steam cleaners...that's the way I used to clean bilges...seems to be out of favor now...used to be that all service stations had one. I suppose they are not very green.

Two things are bound to happen if you do this.
First, you'll risk never waking up again.
Second, McCain will lose a vote.
Heed Margo's lesson. Once a bilge gets oily and greasy, it's just about impossible to get all of the oil out of the wood. Even if you steam clean it, there will be enough oil left in the wood so that paint won't stick.
There's absolutely no product that'll clean your bilge without scrubbing and lots of elbow grease. Any solvent that's strong enough to emulsify the oils in the wood without scrubbing will be strong enough to destroy the wood.

Betty B I would put my reasoning, my Ivy League education, my experience, accomplishments and even my boat against yours any day of the week.
And by the way cleaning my bilge is an easy one, its about gleening from others their experiences that will help me find the best solution for cleaning the bilge.

Engine degreaser in a spray can. You get it any auto parts place, Its designed to hose off. I'm assuming you'll do it on the hard and not pump all the crap overboard.

look all you liberals, you are all so far out of touch with reality! And I'm talking about you democrats that are for Obama too.
Get a grip people. This would be worse than the Carter Administration. If you idiots had your was we'd be back up to a 21% mortgage interest rate.
Accept the fact. McCain has already won this election! Go home and sit on the porch, put your bumper stickers on your car or do whatever it is you people do... !

Scrape off the heavy grease cruds, then use an powerful steamer to clean the rest.. Simple as that...

Don't go crazy with chemicals, Boyles has it right on this one. A steam jenny with soap is fine just lay oil absorb under the hull to catch the oil and your good to go. Regular gunk engine degreaser applied after the first solid pass with the steam jenny will speed things up.
Most steam cleaners are 900 psi so no using the pressure to get up close just wash it from 4 to 6 inches.
I picked up your mooring Saturday Thanks

Confidence, Pat? Anyone unwilling or unable to figure out how to clean a bilge is a damn puss. Even the five year old in my life asks more intelligent and less sissy questions than that.
