I just joined the forum and this is my first post.

I recently completed a cedar strip kayak from a kit that supplied all the cedar strips. I'm planning to build another and am looking for a lumber supplier in the Atlanta area that carries suitable Western Red Cedar. Through internet search, I've found Norcross Supply that carries "select" grade that is $1.73 a foot for a 1x4 board. Does anyone have any experience with Norcross Supply or know of another supplier?

Thanks,

Bob Beaullieu

Bob---If you want to try something different type in Georgia Department of Agriculture. Then go to the Market bulletin. As a resident of the state of Georgia you may subscribe free of charge or you may look at the online copy. There are numerous custom wood saw mills in Georgia. You should find one not too far from you that custom saws local cedar. The prices would be dramatically less expensive. I live about an hour from the Fla. line and pick up cypress, cedar, oak and some fruitwood at very reasonable prices. Sometimes they will saw to my dimensions. Just a thought. Recently I bought 17 ft. cedar for a project. Nice lumber.

Take a look at a lumber yard that carries red cedar decking....I found some very nice 5/4 x 6" straight grain clear for $.90/linear ft. 2 years ago.

They also had some clear alaskan yellow cedar for the same price a year or two before that. Nice contrast to the red cedar.

I've used allot of WRC from Norcross supply . Their clear grade is top quality ,which is really what I think you want for such a labor intensive project . Don't skimp on wood quality . It's very light , and a joy to work ,but wear a dust mask . I've developed an allergy to it .

Didn't Norcross Supply burn down in that big fire about a year ago? If I'm not mistaken they are on the corner of Buford hwy and Jimmy Carter near the railroad tracks.

I get all my wood from Peach State Lumber products in Kennesaw. They have quite a selection of good quality wood. Highly recommended.
