I have a 240 Volt air compressor, and I recently moved to a house with no 220 outlet (electrician wants too much to install one).

I could buy a 110 model compressor, but I thought I would investigate the use of a so called step up transformer.

Does anyone have experience with any particular model, robust enough to run a 3 hp compressor at 240v (draws 7 amps)?

Thanks!

It's not that hard to install a 220 outlet. Buy a book, do it yourself, save a bundle.

A so called step up transformer would be 95-98% efficient.....240 volts at 7 amps would equate to 110 volts at about 16 amps or so at the source......your household socket current limit is 15 amps.....there would be absolutely no safety margin and would probably pop the breaker every time that you turned the unit on.....better to have the dedicated service. I actually had the power company to set a new transformer for me dedicated for the shop.....believe me, it's cheaper to wire in an outlet.
