View Full Version : My Second Trip on the Colorado River

Hello folks,

I thought you'd enjoy some pictures from my recent trip (approx. a month ago) on the Lower Colorado River. Those involved were me, my lady, and our two dogs, Banner and Cody. The Lower Colorado is one of the "River Lakes" we have here on the border of Arizona. It has flow from the releasing of water from the Hoover Dam (to power Las Vegas) but, unless you're directly below the Hoover, the flow is not terribly strong.

The boat used is my Pygmy Wineglass Wherry. This weekend I will be varnishing the inside, installing new bronze horn oarlocks, and leathering the oars.

This was the last trip that I used my GARBAGE (did I say they suck?) Stearns oarlocks. I'm doing a year of AmeriCorps (national branch of the peace corps) and simply don't have the green paper stuff that makes the world go round. Another embarassing point, as seen in the photos, my oars were padded in the locks with a cut brown towel (brown looks like leather from a distance - har har!).

One more note about these oarlocks before the pictures, I replaced all the fasteners on these locks with stainless steel, and they still continued to break. There's a picture here with the lock being held together with p-cord.

Although I don't really need to say this on this forum, as everyone knows here, but if anyone comes to this board from the internet: DO NOT BUY STEARNS OARLOCKS!

And now the pics (enjoy!):

Garbage "Stearns" brand oarlocks. I finally got me some bronze horns, mommy!

Nice pics, nice boat

Thanks Tom. In many of the pics, my good friend "Mr. Schlitz" is in them. With the price of gas sky rocketing, the price of hops has sky-rocketed as well. When I'm on the river, I've got a taste for the cheap stuff and it keeps the wallet a little bit more full.

Those pics are awfully tiny no? I'd love a more jumbo show!

You're right; they are tiny. If you click on them, it takes you to the larger picture.

Do a lot of people not like having to click the picture?

I got it now...Thanks!

I would like to make it easier on you guys - and I think it's much better when they're full-size in the thread window.

Anyone use webshots.com (I paste the "Post directly in a forum" link) and know how to make them full size?

Hey WWaterman...

How do you like it in Prescott? I travelled there on a rented Harley a few years ago, from Sedona via Jerome, and through the Pass...I thought it was a really cool city...Do you like it?

I love Prescott. I'm originally from Connecticut and, after turning age 18, I moved west. After living in Utah, Wyoming, California, and even Alaska (you could say I lived by my bootstraps!) I went to Prescott College in Prescott.

Right now, I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. Our climate is great, yet we still have seasons (and good skiing only 2 hours away in Flagstaff). Bordering Prescott National Forest is great too - and within a 20 minute drive you can be at 8,000 feet. All around, and in, town is Ponderosa Pines.

I can't complain. I love it here. Being able to go to Mexico, California, Colorado, and the Colorado River/Lakes is awesome.

We also have a bunch of fun bars and good food.

As you can tell, I like it here :)

Message me if you want to know more. I can go on-and-on!

I figured out how to make them bigger.

Enjoy!

Great pics! Better to have brown towel oarlock pads in a place like yours than making perfect leather ones while sitting in a garage.;)

Nice looking dogs too!

Excellent - great stuff.

We want photos of the next trip too.
