View Full Version : Dave & Ken Memorial Fund
Well done, folks.
As of the moment, $360 has been collected. Here's a link for Dave & Ken's Memorial Fund (http://www.woodenboat.com/wbstore/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=91&zenid=40n0iu0tigonlnh5vshbl62nu6).
Keep it coming.

It seems like just yesterday folks here raised a huge pile of cash to buy and ship two cannons in celebration of two old wooden boats. I'll go get the numbers if wanted.
Step up and honor two fine shipmates.
Please.

I wonder, human nature being what it is, if more people would step up if a list of the contributors were posted. It doesn't matter to me personally; and I'd be willing to bet many of those who have already anted up feel the same. An opt-out option might be a good idea too for those who actually don't want the notice. But some folks might like the recognition and might be more likely to pitch in if they knew that they - and others - would see their name on the list. Just an idea; what do you all think? Is there some reason this isn't a good idea from an internet protocol standpoint? Is it impractical for other reasons?

IMHO: not appropriate.
Added for clarification if it makes a difference: not suggesting posting amounts of contributions, just names.
When my sister died a similar fund was established in her name. Because the names of the contributors were made public I was able to contact many of them to thank them for their support. When I did, I learned a lot of wonderful things about the ways my sister's life had touched their own. It was a heartwarming and uplifting experience that gave me a richer and fuller sense of the meaning and importance of my sister's life to people beyond our immediate family. She lived some distance from me so these people were all strangers to me before this happened and would have stayed so if I hadn't had access to their names. That experience is part of where the idea I'm floating here came from.
Scot, if you'd care to elaborate, I'd be interested to know why you think it's an inappropriate idea. I'm not taking issue with your opinion, just interested in different viewpoints.

I believe, and maybe Scot can confirm, that the donee's family or represenative gets a list of the donors. I recall getting a nice card from Phyllis, when this process was used for Norm.

Hey, pretty good.
For the record, the cannon affair raised ~ $3,000 from 45 (I think) donors.

As a long time lurker and only relatively recent poster, I always enjoyed the postings of both Ken and Dave.It was something of a shock, after being away for a bit, to read they have now both passed on :(
Scot, I would very much like to contribute AND have my name on the card(s) but I have no credit cards or cheques.Other then sending a money-order to the respective facilities, would it be possible for me(and perhaps others like me) to send our-money orders to you, care of Woodenboat Magazine so that my name could be included on the card(s).
Thanks for your attention,
Peter Lenihan
Yes, or you can send it directly to them and just send me a note.

We have about 10 days and $490 to go...
Cannon fund donations started at, IIRC, $5. It's easy to be a 'member' of this 'club', even if you don't have a credit card! ;)

To the WBForumites,
Thank you so much. Not only the tremendous generosity to the Memorial Fund for Dave & Ken, but for all the help and support these last 2 years. We could not have come through it without you all. You are in my prayers.
Peace & Health in 2009
