I'm going down a bit later in the year to thrash a car around some back roads and race tracks....
I would love to and had planned to but ah...the $$$$ just aren't there...sigh.
I have a good friend down there I haven't seen for years as well....double sigh.

Probably. I usually tow the boat to Goolwa in march so that get's priority but by march who knows what water there will be there. So Hobart is likely this time.

I'll be there (only a 20 minute drive). Over 400 boats and 60,000+ people - should be fantastic. Last one was a blast.

OK - Gary - Dunc - Rufus - Peter.
We tow the Yellowtail down?
Betya we have the only one of these there:

Peter - we'll need a bronze muffler and bronze flywheel

I don't think so....
It'd be a land-based tow.

If you do make it to Hobart, be sure to look up Frank Brown who will be aboard S/V MAY QUEEN (an 1867 ketch), demonstrating knots and knotting techniques. He's quite the card and makes an entire menagerie of little knotted animals and figures that will tickle your funnybones. "Slipstick" Madeline may also be there, a lady who is really an expert at knots and lines... together, they're even more fun.

It would be great to have an EBS if several of us were there on the same day.

Too right it would! I'll talk to SWMBO tonight and see if she'd like to go too. We could take a week or two around the Island while we're about it. Brian, if you come that far stay about for a while, it's probably the best time of the year. It's been dry, let's hope the fires will not be about. The forecast for the summer is not so good in Victoria.

Stayed there at the last show, the locals were still screaming abuse at each other at 3am.

At the last show we stayed in a little hotel 20 minutes walk up the hill behind the city.
Fantastic view and a few little eateries nearby.
I stayed in Salamanca place a few years ago during Targa Tasmania. OK then, but perhaps I was too buggered to hear noise makers.
This time we may stay a bit outside Hobart and just come up for the day.

Where do you sail? Because I'm staying away from whereever you are :p, as you are obviously confused by the various points of the compass! If you are still confused, New Zealand consists of three major Island, the North, South and West Islands. As convicts inhabit the West Island, we don't bother claiming it

Wondered if someone was going to raise the flag. I am going. Booked the tickets today. I am on the hunt for Minena and will be there for about five days and it would be a pleasure and a hoot to have a EBS with some of you. Minena was my grandad's, built in 1924 and sold out of the family in 1947 when he passed. Never laid eyes on it till Craig the current owner sent me some pix. Cant wait to touch her.
How can we make contact?

I'm booking tickets tonight for myself and Stephen(the "boy")! I hadn't really planned on going down but then circumstances changed. Stephen also really needs to see that I'm not alone in the world when it comes to timber boats and all that they entail!!!
We are also fortunate enough to be staying within walking distance of the Festival as Stephen's brother is a journalist who lives at Battery Point.

Good news WFK!
Some thoughts:
I'll be happy to see folks at the boat anytime, and I expect to be quite a lot of the time. But we ought to all get together simultaneously at some stage.
As people get organised, maybe post which days you are attending etc. Then we could organise a time to all get together initially. You really need more than one day I believe. Although the festival goes over 4 days, it really doesn't start till Friday afternoon, with many boats not docking till 4 or 5 o'clock due to taking part in the parade of sail. I don't know whether we're doing that- depends on weather a bit. Friday evening tends to be a bit of a sit around in the cockpit and eat oysters sort of deal, and look posh, which we don't go in for all that much: This year there is a welcome function from 6-7.30 Friday evening, which sounds like a dock party to me. Saturday & Sunday are the main days, with a bit of fun in the dock on Saturday evening.
There is a 'tavern' within the grounds this year "The Yard Arm Tavern" if it gets too crowded on the boat, but I don't know what form it takes or the level of amenity. We could also go somewhere for a meal maybe, depending on what people want to do. But first things first- lets get a plan for an initial time worked out, sometime in the next couple of weeks.
Good idea Shamus. SWMBO and self are booked into accommodation in Hobart for Friday night and Saturday night, then we're due to fly out on Sunday evening. So, IF welcome :D, anything happening from Friday midday to Sun pm would be fine for us! Rick
Portland,
Thanks so much for the offer.......I first came down to Australia for my twin brothers wedding in 1988, we were 27 and his new wife's father took me down to the pilot tracking station.......I think at Queens Cliffe ? He was a a retired captain of some type of container ship running back and forth from up north somewhere........Anyway, after touring the station...... he took me over to the yard where they built the pilot boats and it was there he introduced me to a guy by the name of Beazley ? Jack, maybe John.......It's been over 20 years so it's all a bit sketchy, but Mr. Beazly took us back to his home and in his back yard, there was a Couta boat he was building..... Now, at the time I was fresh out of college,....actually, truth be told I quit and had been working for a boat builder here on Orcas, so I was quite thrilled to see all of this. ......Well, we hit it off well enough that he gave me a set of drawings , hardly readable now of a boat called "Hero" ? He also gave me an old picture of a man standing next to a couta boat and was quite shocked when several years later I saw the same shot in WB Mag........ ........... Bill
Rob,
I dug out the plans I have and they are for "Hero", as well as a sail plan for a boat named "Dawn" of Sorrento. Kind of fun to look at again!

Duncan,
I went to The Wooden Boat Festival for the first time in 2007 and took the time to have a week in Tassie.
I had been to Tassie three times before to do Targa Tasmania, but had seen very little of the place.
I decided then that I wouldn't miss another Boat Festival.
The atmosphere and to beauty of the boats and workmanship is just outstanding and inspirational stuff.
This time we are spending ten days in Tassie to try to see more of the place.
Its amazing just how cheap the airfares are if you take advantage of Virgins early specials.
Do it Duncan, you will not regret it!

Greetings all, just decided to go to Hobart on Friday, situation's a bit like Duncans.
Been doing the usual insane levels of work on my boat and felt that time/money should not be spent but what the hell, I need a break. The boat is out of the water in a shed at Port Adelaide, and the yard may be closed in the near future, not businees reasons but Government pressure. Anyway, trying to make the most of it.
Would be great to catch up with fellow forumites, will be there from Saturday afternoon, about 5, till Monday morning. This is the first post for years but have been a regular reader.
If something has been arranged, would someone let me know?
Regards to all

No it won't! Duncan's planning to install himself in a container (installed on its end, I think) as an office in northern NSW! He'll freeze for a couple of months in winter and then be steamed alive for the rest of the year . No office work will be done as a consequence so the funds needed to build the clinker yacht won't be forthcoming and he'll be stuck with that Kingswood forever! This is, of course, unless I'm just over reacting to the C word! Duncan, this needs to be discussed carefully, in Hobart, on Shamus' crowded boat (aka WBF meeting point). Rick

For those who are familiar with travel to Taz, our concept is to rent a camper van in Melbourne and get on the ferry and stay for a week. Are there camper parks or rest stops on Taz? We in Aus for about three weeks - Melbourne - Adelaide - Sydney - go home.

Full time in a big company up at Palm Beach and been promoted from Project Landscape Architect to Senior Landscape Architect since I joined last August. So the Premier (not Kingswood) will be done in parallel with the shed. The clinker is in fact a batten seem carvel.

Police rescued two Adelaide brothers on a 1959 built woodie, Narda II, supposedly on route to the Hobart WB festival. They broke a rudder and had a gear failure aloft and couldn't lower the main I think. Looks like an expensive trip, their signal was evidently picked up by accident by a rescue plane in the area on another call.

Ion Barnes-
Plenty of caravan parks about in Tassie and it is a good way to see the place. You could easily use more than a week though. Personally, I'd fly in and rent a camper here, rather than bring one over on the ferry- only because it would be cheaper I would think.
With regard to parks near Hobart- you might find yourself 8 or 10 miles from the site of the festival- there are a couple of parks at Cambridge, one at Seven Mile Beach, one at Berriedale- (no idea what that one is like) but these would be within reasonable distance.
With regard to meeting up- I'm thinking maybe 2 p.m Saturday at the entrance to Kings Pier, or some such arrangement. Gives everyone a chance to look about a bit first, then stroll across to the Yard Arm Tavern- or somewhere. Please suggest otherwise if this doesn't sound good.

Thanks Shamus, that sounds like a plan - 2pm Saturday Kings Pier. We have no definite plans except to show up, meet Craig Dandeaux, see the boat, see more boats and view some of the countryside. There is never enough time for everything.
Whats the weather like right now? Heard that Adalaide was 41 a couple of days ago! Yikes, we still have the remenents of 18" / 450mm of snow from Dec 12th.
2pm at the entrance to Kings Pier! Well done Shamus, and thanks! Rick

Friday night I'm kinda committed though. I've got a couple of partners in the boat and it has been decided, that Friday night is immediates only- because last time there was a bit of a stuff up where my wife and one of the other owners got stuck babysitting someone else's problems. Well, lost my job today, in the nicest possible way of course. This will be one of my last posts for a bit I expect, I will have to get a new computer and net link up and set up at home. Scanner too I guess. I've been spoiled by the technology. I'll get in touch via a telecafe and let you know what's going on.
Look forward to seeing some of you at Hobart, might stay the extra day now. I'll PM. Ian and Duncan with my contact details and anyone who wants them can get them from there.

FWIW I reckon the best part of tassie is the coast south of Hobart. Drive down the D'Entrcasteaux Channel, Cygnet, Huonville, and on down as far as you can go. In Tassie they actually let you park your camper in all sorts of places-doesn't have to be an organised caravan park.

Hi Everyone,
We are here and looking forward to seeing you at the tavern @ 2pm. This is such a beautiful harbour. We found Minena, kinda touching really, and not much changed from the few pics I have. She has had a bit of bad luck with the cyclone that came through about Jan 28th. She was pulled from her mooring and put on the beach, her skipper was really concerned that he was going to have nothing left, however, with the next high tide, she stood up. Craig tells me that she has a number of sprung planks as far as he can tell at this point and will go in for repairs after the show.
Yard Arm Tavern @ 2pm - I am the guy with grey beard and 'CANADA' on the shirt.

Definitely. Boat was designed for winds up to force 6 and significant wave height of 2m - positive stability to 119 degrees and can be righted from a full 180 inversion by 1 person in a couple of minutes! I'd love to take one in the next raid but who is going to get my stall ready if I am sailing (lol).
Very long days but the thing that is so inspiring is the interest in wooden boats and the really enthusiastic people you meet. I've just about lost my voice from talking to people and I still have two days to go! Met some other forum members today which was great.
Hopefully I can get around and get some pictures to post here of the beautiful boats on display.

I put a lot of those photos up at about midnight on Saturday night. It's now 7.30 Sunday morning. Weather is much better (it drizzled for a while yesterday morning) and we're back off to the festival in a minute. We're "racing" in the rally/race this afternoon. It's a pursuit race, and it looks like they're setting a soldier's (reaching) course, and we're giving away away 8 minutes to a boat which is about as fast as us eased. If we do well we'll call it a race, and if not we'll call it a rally.
Before I go, here's a famous local boat, the yawl, Gypsy.
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd277/shamus1955/woodenboatfestival2009149a.jpg
Gypsy got a new name plate recently:
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd277/shamus1955/woodenboatfestival2009153.jpg
She has been in the same family for over 90 years- I think five different family members have owned her. She is used about as much or more than any other boat at the Bellerive marina- they're always out doing something. She has attended 91 opening days without missing a year, and has also done a 2 week cruise up the east coast each year, and has a bay named after her (at least I've always thought it must have been named after her, and I'm sticking with it). Here's a photo they had on display of an opening day a couple of years ago.

At the airport again, thingsd have been a bit rough in Victoria but we,so far, have been out of the fire zones. One boat owner and partner I met hasn't been so lucky. All gone except the boat they are now living on.
Loads of pix but I'll have to get out and see if I can post them during the week.
It's the smaller craft that I like, took a ticket or two in the 'Selkie" raffle (how did I do that?). A Huon pine dinghy with all the trimmings, delivered. Caher (pictured above) is my favourite boat of the festival with the possible exception of a Arondiak Guide Boat, the first I've seen in the flesh.
Several geodesic and skin on frame craft, a locally designed open water rowing skiff I lusted after and even got to try and several other dedigns including one from the Onion Boat works in the US.

Thanks Shamus for a great welcome and a delightful tour of Ronita - what a wonderful boat!! Also great to meet the other WBFites! I'm stuck in Sydney for a couple of days but once I get home I'll put some pics up too. By the way, that Herreshoff is a local boat for you - the owner lives at Kettering and he's a great guy. I know him so I'll see if I can find out a bit more about her history. I know Jim sailed her down from Sydney only a few years ago and I'm pretty sure she was built in Sydney. Name is Sylena. But did you have a good look at Windward Star? Wow!!
By the way, my shipwright mate who scoured the festival with me for a couple of days announced that Andrew D's craftsmanship was the best in small boats on display at the show; it's not a competition but that's quite an endorsement from an old Garden Island chippie - great to meet you too Andrew (although if you're going to keep showing off like that .....) I'll send some pics in a few days. Rick

The straight stemmed vessel is an old ferry, Cartela.
I wasn't going to put this photograph up, but she got home all right and all those passengers are safe ashore, so here she is:
Thanks for that Shamus. Interesting looking vessel, and interesting history too. Sadly not quite as pretty as the bow shot would suggest, but interesting none the less. At least it has survived and is still working. Thanks for posting the pictures, they are great. Were there any steamers?

There were a few steam launches, and a nice bloke took me for a tour through a steam launch which was restored to an almost crazy level of finish, but I'd neglected to take my camera. There was also a steam powered outboard motor, if you will believe that!
Rick:
We were really sorry not to see some more of you both (is it "Chrissie"?- I'm still having trouble remembering.) enjoyed it immensely.
apart from the Folkboat parked next to you and the Twisterand do we happen to know anyone who owns a folkboat and a twister, by any chance?:D

nice bunch of pictures posted here.
i did turn up for the festival but was unwell with a head cold so kindof kept to myself.
anyhow i had a good look around and was suprised to see MINENA. i stayed aboard her in 1997 when she was owned by roger rigby. the yacht was in townsville and roger allowed david and i to stay onboard whilst we slipped PEQUOT.
there were a couple of other yachts i had seen many years previous and its always nice to "meet" them again to see how they have faired over time.
i liked the aboriginal reed raft display but didnt like the continual pounding of the roving drum band.
all up a great festival. i wish i had taken my own yacht down.

What a shame that you didn't have your camera. Wally Mounster will be the man with the steam powered outboard, a rather clever guy who is also engineer on Endeavour. There are a few people with steam outboards, but the complication of getting all that gear onto a transom is too much for me, give me a real little steamship.
Daniel
Ah Shamus, sorry too but there was so much to try and squeeze in - at the festival and beyond, unfortunately. Not to worry though, we're pretty regular visitors to Hobart so I'm sure we'll see you again soon. Let me know if you're heading up to NSW or Vietnam! It's Tracy by the way!
Bernadette, I'd offend everyone if I commented on the `music' at the festival, except for a young folk group called, I think, the Foley Artists - they were great! The mob going around in a boat singing on Saturday were just too much for me though and then that drum group - aargh - we could even hear it from our hotel!!
And that steam outboard - you've got to be kidding - what's the opposite of `blends in'? And you'd probably burn yourself on it!

Shamus, I am so sorry, we were over on the other side of the show, and had to run back to the car to put money in the meter and did not get back till about half hour late, we got a beer at the Tavern and sat down to wait and watch. Along came Craig, skipper of Minena and he took us back to Minena. Sorry guys.

I've got good pix of the steam outboard in my batch, Haven't even looked at most of them myself yet. Got to sort out the business of posting pix from a PC, (a link to an existing instruction would help) but I've got to go now as I'm meeting Anne for lunch. Such a great show, so much to see, and most of them working boats, not furniture standard. Great to meet people face to face too, I wonder if Adrian will venture down for a post or two. Tried to get some pix of Ronita sailing but ran out of time and not sure if they will be any good.
Will try to post pix tomorrow if I can sort out the procedure.

Nice to meet you too Rick. Your mate obviously didn't have time to look close enough! My favourite was Ned Trewartha's Mrs Wilsons Dinghy replica - carvel hull with top two clinker strakes - just stunning. He did a Coquina last time in full length King Billy planking which was nice too.
I also liked "Aziza" a new 32' Hess cutter but my favourite is Able Mabel - Roger Harwood's twister.
All in all a good show and great to catch up with people.
There's another festival in Northern Tassie on 21/22nd Feb with around 10,000 people through but much more relaxed.

Jeff I use photobucket.
1. Reduce large pictures to 640X480 pixels and save under new file name (so as to keep the large original). This is quicker than letting photobucket do the whole resize.
2. Upload to photobucket, choosing their large (640x480) size option.
3. Save
4. If you put your cursor over the thumbnail of the image in your photobucket album a drop down menu will appear. The bottom option says Image Code in bold font. If you point to the bold font & click it will save the code.
5. Use the right mouse button and paste into the forum reply screen.
There may be better sites to use than photobucket, it just happens to be where I went when imagestation closed.

Shamus,
I also use a program called shrink pic
(free - http://www.onthegosoft.com/shrink_pic.htm) which can automatically re-size the pics when uploading to photobucket or even e-mails. It doesn't alter the original on your computer but makes things a lot quicker. I haven't had any problems with it so far.

I have some shots of Able Mabel, which I'll post if I can EVER get out of Sydney (software's on my computer at home, of course!). Able Mabel's been built so beautifully and so strongly - I really hope we can get Windrose up to something close to this standard.
I was only thinking today what a shame it is that the Sydney WB Festival is so pathetic compared to Hobart's. That's a shame really, as there are so many great wooden boats in NSW, QLD and VIC that don't get to Hobart due to the time involved. We intend to take Pipsqueak to the next Sydney festival nevertheless - it would be great if we could all catch up there!

Peter, that's the "Mrs Wilsons" dinghy by Ned. He built two of them side by side last year. more pics at http://www.nedtrewarthawoodenboats.com.au/Whats_happening%20in_the_Shed_.html there is lots of history behind the design.
One of these festivals I'd love to be an entrant so I can get around all the boats. There is so much to see and I could look at some of the boats for hours.
Rick, hopefully we'll see you in Sydney next year. We came up last year and received a really warm welcome from the locals and the museum staff. The organisers of that festival came down to Hobart this year so who knows - it might be bigger than last year.
Here's a question - at 550 boats and say 60,000 people is this the largest boat show/ festival(including the plastic boat shows) in the southern hemisphere? I know it is bigger in numbers than the Sanctuary Cove show but what about the others??
What about the numbers in the US?

Me too - I can't believe I missed so many boats, including Mrs Thingamy's whatchamacallit and that green and white launch that Peter put up! That outboard on the back of Roger's Twister's going to have a few people wondering. In fact, it's for his dinghy `Dave'. You'll have to be familiar with Snake Gully to get Roger's little joke with his naming - naturally I'm not old enough to get it ... (I wish!!)

I think that 'maybe 5.5' was a 1952 Sydney Hobart contender.
As promised, here are some shots to add to the collection, particularly for those of you not lucky enough to have visted Tasmania's WB festival this year:
There were lots of boats:

http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr69/rfnk/AWBF1.jpg
http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr69/rfnk/AWBF3.jpg
These are all Derwent Class boats - a traditional design peculiar to the Hobart area, and a particular favourite of mine. When I first saw these boats around 10 years ago, they were all looking fairly shabby. It's a credit to the class owners that they're all looking terrific now:

http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr69/rfnk/AWBF7.jpg
http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr69/rfnk/AWBF6.jpg
This is a traditional 18' skiff. This was the only one that gybed into the dock on opening day - the others all wimped out and tacked, while, to their shame. Britannia was towed in!
http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr69/rfnk/AWBF2.jpg
This was a particularly nice Folkboat - built in Sydney but using Tassie timber
http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr69/rfnk/AWBF8.jpg
And this is just another shot of the Alden yacht that Shamus included earlier - built recently and very beautiful
http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr69/rfnk/AWBF14.jpg
And this for me was one of the real stars of the show. She's a Herreshoff design, built in Ballina and Forster in the 1990s. The interior is as impressive as the exterior - it's almost entirely Australian red cedar inside. Absolutely beautiful!
http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr69/rfnk/AWBF13.jpg
Sorry about the size of the pictures in the first two sets. It doesn't seem to be possible to reduce them! They're the same size as all the others in Photobucket and in the processing software - a WBF mystery I'm afraid! Rick

Unfortunately not. I'm kicking myself for not taking any though; I didn't want to seem too much of a stickybeak. The guy who owns the boat is in your area though, he loves traditional boats and he's a great guy. I'm sure if you were to approach him he'd be happy to show you around.
By the way, I saw this boat in Launceston last week. Of course there are plenty of boats that look a bit like this but, apart from the rudder configuration, it looks like a stretched Twister. Do any of you know the boat or what it is? It was in a sealed off section of the marina so I couldn't get close.

I didn't say Launceston was better than Hobart, just nice! Launceston has really nice houses but Hobart leaves almost anywhere else dead as far as sailing options go! A lot of Hobart's really nice waterfront houses and old businesses have been replaced with modern atrocities, like Sydney. Of course Launceston does have that `beautiful' cement works ....

You could expect to see sea conditions of that sort between Recherche and Hobart. Honestly I'd look twice at the weather forecast before I set off for there in a 36 ft ballasted yacht. There is no way you're going in a mirror! but I think Andrew wants you and me to do it in one of his bay raiders,
I'm captain, OK?

You downunder guys keep referring to "couta boats" and my curiosity is up. What the He77 is a couta boat?
Great thread, btw. Thanks for sharing with the right-side up world. ;)

Interesting class, Couta. Lots of leeway in the lengths allowed with the other measurements required to change in proportion. Quite a few old boats, too, competing against recent replicas.
Thanks, Shamus.
Shamus, thanks for the tip re Launceston vs Hobart - I'll keep it up! :D Ah, I long for those balmy days back in Launceston ... You've read The Little Prince haven't you? Might be a good read for all Taswegians by the sound of it!
You know 30 years ago Tracy and I went to Tasmania for a 5 week tour. We started out from Hobart and drove to Marrawah that day (for the surf - no surf). Then we had to decide what to do for the next 4.7 weeks! Don't worry, we found plenty to do, and some good surf. All in all, apart from the frostbite, it was a great trip - even the blizzard we had at Cradle Mountain in the middle of January was fun (well, getting back to the hut was, anyway).
Trace and I've decided where we want to live when we move to Tasmania. It's ... Rick
