Having searched the archives, I would like to use good old linseed putty mixed with red lead oxide for the seams below the water line. Unfortunately in New Zealand one can not buy red lead oxide and none of the seam compounds made by International etc are available hear. Even tried a number of chemical stockist without any luck. Most chandler shops appear to not even know what it’s used for. The question I have is, is putty by itself OK.

Try George Kirby Jr. Paint Co., New Bedford Mass.
508-997-9008 or www.kirbypaint.com (http://www.kirbypaint.com)
They are a source of red lead primer and white lead paste.

We did Grantala (50' cruiser) in August and used putty mixed with antifouling primer.

I checked out Fosters, but they no longer stock it. They do have red lead primer paint, bur advise once existing stock is sold out they will no longer stock it.
I have however found a source of red lead oxide from an Austrialian chemical supplier/distributor. Thanks for the feedback

Hi, can anyone tell me about lead putty used in 17th-18th century shipbuilding. I am interested in lead content and possibilities of leaching.
Cheers!
