Not my area of expertise, as you might guess. But certainly no problem buying and owning a pistol. I would think our laws are not out of the ordinary in terms of what you would encounter in most states.
Concealed weapons require a permit...that's not unusual.
Washington state has one of the highest numbers of registered gun owners in the country.
As a general rule, a person may legally open carry in Washington State in any place it is legal to possess a loaded handgun. To open carry in a vehicle (i.e., car, bus, etc...) a person must have a valid concealed pistol license. Some police agencies can be unfriendly towards open carry, so it is important that before a person exercises their right to bear arms in this fashion they acquaint themselves with relevant laws.
Washington is a "Stand Your Ground" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Doctrine#Stand-your-ground) state, in which there is no duty to retreat in the face of what would be perceived by an ordinary person to be a threat to themselves or others by another person that is likely to cause serious injury or death.
It is a Class C felony for a non-citizen to possess a firearm in Washington without an Alien Firearm License. Washington is not currently issuing Alien Firearm Licenses.[189] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_the_United_States_(by_state)#cite_note-188)
It is a gross misdemeanor to aim a firearm "whether loaded or not, at or towards any human being".[190] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_the_United_States_(by_state)#cite_note-189)
Washington State accepts the concealed weapons permits from the following states: Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Utah.[191] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_the_United_States_(by_state)#cite_note-190)

No. The usual Federal rules apply for transfer:
That means for an inheritance or gift all firearms made after 1898 must be sent to a federal firearms license holder for background check and transfer to a local individual. Some FFL holders will receive only from another FFL.....some will accept receipt of firearms for transfer from private individuals. Go figure.
As these guys charge 25-50 bucks per firearm, it may be worthwhile for one of your heirs to obtain a federal CCR (Curios and Relics Collector) permit so they can accept firearms 50 years old and older directly from you. Firearms more recent than that will have to go through an FFL.
I hold a CCR as a gunsmith, if needed.
Perhaps it would be interesting to also explore the fact that firearms are available thru garage sales and private sales in the newspaper. There no requirements exist except the ability to pay. Jack

Thanks Bob....I suspect that something may be required for the handguns, the winchesters were made between 1873 and 1892...

Handguns will have to go through an FFL and there is a 3-day waiting period unless the transferee possesses a state concealed carry permit, available at the local sheriff's office for 55 bucks. Washington is a right-to-carry state, the sheriff office makes money at it, so there is no hassle. Takes around 4 weeks.

Thanks....the Browning and the Smith go to Oklahoma....all the other handguns are Colt and a couple of Remingtons, 1847-1862 except for the 1873 Colt which is still a Black powder gun.....The Contender and the High Standard have already been sold....keeping the dueling pistols in case of disputes on the forum....

After due and careful consideration......the stuff I have collected over the last 55-60 years of my adult life are not the things that the average Joe leaves behind when he croaks....and I would be rather unhappy if I did croak, and it took a week or so for what little family I do have to be notified/arrive here.....and after seeing first hand what happened when dad passed, then mom.....in one case a caregiver, in the other a nurse and things just disappeared....and considering the value of some of this stuff I would prefer to place it now than have someone to try and figure out what I might have wanted and place that burden on someone who really doesn't need the aggravation......
and there's just a lot of stuff that I really don't have much use for these days...like a gazillion clamps, SS standing rigging etc.....but I also have folks that can use the stuff...and I'd rather see it go that way......like Calico carbines with 100 rd magazines, and similar...I'll keep my granddads '92 winchester..
Otherwise.....I'm gonna hang around as long as I can....

Waiting on parts....that someone promised......and the dude in Annapolis hasn't given me a part number or just what he needs yet...I happen to have TWO (2) motor brackets for the Avon....I thought I had lost one so bought another, then found the first buried in the warehouse.....I gotta get some help and clean those out....most of the stuff is new/unused and has been in storage since I sold the boat.....

You are a wise old salt. In my line of work I have seen lots of heartache over stuff that could have been avoided by someone thinking ahead. But there are also times when persons start to clear out their stuff that they are expecting to pass on right after the stuff. I am happy to know you are just being a responsible parent.
