I have a Clae F6 , single cylinder, watercooled, 4 stroke marine engine. After extensive repairs which included valves and valve seat regrinds, I cannot get the thing to start. I have had backfiring through the carby so adjusted the timing , then backfiring through the exhaust so adjusted again. I have good spark from the magneto , checked the valve timing, checked the timing to spark at near topcentre, No luck Tried with (fresh) petrol poured into the cylinder throuh the sparkplug opening, tried again . Nothing!checked the clearance of the valves(0.10 and o.12 inlet and outlet) checked the carby all working well. Help!!!

did you check compression?

Shouldn't the spark timing be a bit earlier than that? It might be worth doing a search on timing for say a Model T Ford and see where they are ignition-timed.

Seems simple, but is it firing on the compression stroke?

How many revs is it supposed to run at ...1200 to 2000 ?

Here's a link for the Schebler carby - although the Clae probably has an Alpha Model D - which is an exact copy of the Schebler.

I know the Clae is very different to a Blaxland - but here are a couple of the settings for a Blaxland for what they are worth - points gap 0.012" - plug gap 0.025" - timing is set so that the points open when the straight mark on the flywheel is 2 1/4" of the circumference before top dead centre.
I was looking for the initial settings for the carby - but can't find them at present.
