WBF's Chris Coose (a knowledgeable catboat owner) might be willing to check her out some weekend: http://tinyurl.com/57x8kj

She looks to be a beauty. Not sure when I'll get to Bristol again. It may be a couple of weeks.

Just spoke to the owner's wife.
They got a house and a baby shortly after coming across this boat 4 years ago. She was in Ipswhich where she had some work done. Spars are under cover. Husband is home after 4 PM. The boat is located deep into the peninsula on the Hanley Farm Rd.
She soke about deck and cockpit work. If that is it, this could a beaut.

Is that the asking price or is it one of those bid things?

No mention of a motor?

Depending on how much you do yourself for less than $10K you could have the boat of your lifetime. Not a bad deal.

Especially if considered next to the 16' version of the same hull for $4500 http://www.atlanticchallenge.com/boats/donated.shtm

August Moon, formerly Sacajewea, was anchored at Ipswich but she is a Newbury built boat (Charlie Powers) and was also hauled and maintained here. She does have a small desiel inboard that I loved the sound and feel of. She is a cat ketch with a small jib. She was the last boat on a cradel before Ralph hired a truck to do his hauling... we also had Sybyl in the yard I was working at, a cat rigged yawl from Herreshoff that I have seen discussed on these pages.

I know this boat very well, and I have sailed on her many times. The former owner sailed her out of Ipswich for many years, then off of Bethel Point in Harpswell. It's kind of sad to see her like that. I remember her being seaworthy when she left Great Island Boatyard, but that's been several years ago.

I have some great photos of her under sail which I think were taken by Steven Bauer. I'll try and post some in beteen pie baking today.

August Moon was built in 1959 by Charlie Powers. She was always named August Moon, and her new owner will be her 5th. My friend was the 3rd and owned her from 1991 til 2004. He has a complete set of plans and a photographic history of her from the time she was building until 2004. I thought I had one of her old staysails in my barn, but I couldn't find it this morning.

I managed to locate these photos of her. I remember as being a joy to sail. Her ketch rig made for a number of different configurations, all of which were well balanced. Sam Crocker designed two sail plans for this hull, the other being a conventional catboat rig. I seem to recall seeing one of these a few years ago further up the Maine coast.

Thanks to Steven Bauer for some of these, who I hope doesn't mind their use here.

Best,
