Very cool. The floating bits were probably pumice. Before Mt. St. Helens blew, I used to go to Boy Scout camp up there - at Spirit Lake. One year we found a kinda rectangular shaped block of pumice, , big enough to float a boy (or two if you were very, very careful). Amazing stuff. Floating rocks. Seemed miraculous at the time.

Thats the Suilven, car and truck ferry leaving Wellington NZ going to Picton in about nov 2006 I think. Since then they have been banned from sailing in seas of over 10 meters. That was taken from the west side of the enterance she was just leaving. You can imagine the issues that would arrise if they lost 100% full power on all engines in those condition just off the beach. We had a major wreck on a reef she passed just of there some 40 years back.

The other major problem they strike is that at some point they have to turn beam on to the sea to make for the enterance to the fiords at the top of the south island. Had another boat take a couple of bad rolls while performing this manuver in 15 mtr seas in I think 2007 which also lead to restrictions.
Seas are from the SW and the common course is W and the NW and it making this turn thats a problem.

I think I'd be a bit reluctant to do like the yacht did, plowing through it. We have milfoil on our lake that looks a bit like that from afar. I got stuck in it once.
