The wife and I would like to do the great circle route soon. Have been looking at various designs. Nexus Marine has a nice 27 foot dory that has caught my eye. We are (for once) not looking for speed. The design speed of 12 or so knots is satisfactory. My concern is inside room. A permanent head is absolute necessary. I am 5 feet 10 inches. The wife is a wee thing at 5 foot two inches. A man in NZ has modified the design and enclosed the pilot house which I would think adds considerable living space. Being from the deep south I have never seen a dory of any description. I will appreciate your observations on the suitability of this design for our purpose. Thanks in advance.

I was on one of the first St. Pierre dories that Nexus built. This was in Alaska and it too had a fully-enclosed cabin. These boats do not have a lot of room inside for their length, but there is certainly ample room for a dedicated head, and comfortable cruising accommodations for two. The cabin and pilothouse layout can easily be modified. It's an efficient hull and will cruise economically with low power. One of the best looking larger dories you're likely to see.

They are very classy looking boats. Lots of other designs with more room inside, though.

The sheer on the plywood Nexus St. Pierre is not as swoopy as on the original lapstrake and carvel hulls. To my eye, the Nexus boat is the prettier.

If you notice.. Cabin is almost centralize on Nexus Dory.. which is good balance... Wider transom allows for kicking up outboard engine...

I like traditional St. Pierre Dory.. Just a ticket for me...

Besides the one in Gardener's Dory Book has anyone seen one set up for sail?

There's quite a few sailing dories around and some of them are St Pierre-ish in appearance, such as Glen-L's and Ken Hankinson's. Tom MacNaughton's are interesting, too. The best known are Jay Benford's, and Paul Fisher has a couple smaller ones at 20.5 feet and 23'4", but these bear little resemblence to the classic St Pierre.

Pete Culler shows two large sailing dories in Pete Culler's Boats, the Cowhorn Dory, 26'6" X 8' and the French Dory, 25'10" X 8'6". Both are gaff-rigged with main and mizzen the same size. The pic below is the smaller Cape Ann dory at 23' X 6'. If you're looking for any kind of decent sail performance, the keel dories of Benford would be a better choice.

I liked the looks of the one in the Dory Book and was just curious that's all.
