December 18, 2008, Chestertown, Maryland: The students of the Radcliffe Creek School Seadog Boatbuilding Program recently finished construction of Babygirl, a 24' Hooper Island draketail.
The RCS Seadogs began the Chapelle inspired sharpie-bottomed Babygirl project in November 2007, first creating a 25' x 4' paper pattern using 1/8's tables and battens (see website below), then building a full-sized model out of luan. The wooden model was then dismantled and used as a pattern to build the finished boat out of medium density overlay on a salt-treated pine frame. (The kids did not handle the salt-treated lumber which was cut and shaped off-site)
Babygirl was built rack-of-eye in the true tradition of Chesapeake shade tree boatbuilding - no plans were utilized. The students spent approximately 150 hours creating the vessel.
The bateaux is a half-sized replica of Mary E., a 45' Dukey Marshall draketail which the RCS Seadogs rebuilt in 2005. Participating program students - all between the ages of five and fifteen - have built or re-built nine Chesapeake workboats since 2001.
Radcliffe Creek School is a private Maryland accredited K though 8 day school focusing on the education of children with above average abilities who exhibit learning difficulties.
The year-long construction process was documented and can be viewed on the Radcliffe Creek Seadog website @ http://www.redlionstudio.com/radcliffecreekseadogs/
