I am planning a major project, and my client wants to use Silver Bali. I have talked to the people at Edensaw in Port Townsend and they say they are no longer importing it. Does anyone know of a source short of going to Surnam? Thanks

Try Brad Ives at bradives@aol.com. I'm not sure if he's still importing it, but give him a try.
Let me know what happens, because I'm interested in getting some in the near future.

Jon if you are on the east coast you might give Ross Gannon a call at Gannon & Benjamin, they buy a lot of wana, silver bali, angelique from Brad Ives and they would know what the situation is with Deepwater and if Brad is still importing.

I know Robert d'Arcy used a great deal of silver bali on the schooner Martha, but I can't remember the source. Bob Triggs (a member on this forum) may know that little bit of info.

It came from Edensaw a couple years back.

Brad supplies Eden Saw East Teak and the others His company is Deepwater Ventures. He will sell direct but you have to buy a container load or pay shipping for one. They have to work directly with the Surinam gov to harvest trees. It is not a steady system and wood quantities come and go. The last batch of Silver bali to come up here had some issues so some of the suppliers may be reluctant to bring anymore in. Brad is in Hawii now working on his sailing supply boat the Kwai. So the lumber thing may have taken a back seat. He was really good to us and we were happy with the wood, about 90% of what we have done so far has been with silver bali. After it is all said and done unless you are building a whole boat you will probably be money ahead using something readily availible from Edensaw or another, East Teak is nice to work with too. They sometimes have a mystry pile you can get for cheap. We picked up all the angelic we used for cabin sole at under $4 a bf
Good luck

Hmm, I don't think so. I helped unload the shipping container. But, I think S/V Papillon is talking about the same person.

I'm pretty sure there is only one Brad Ives and I know there is only one Jack Risser
This is way off post but The Kwai projec (http://www.svkwai.com/)t is pretty cool. Just think delivering goods to islanders under sail novel concept. Wish Ihad the time and means to be a part of it.

It appears that no one actually has a big pile of Silver Bali sitting around. some people are in the market for it and some people say they may be able to get some. Edensaw says that the last Silver Bali that they got was unusable and are not planning on importing any more. It comes from Surinam the only Dutch speaking country in South America. If you wanted to get a container full it would be easier than not but still not easy. I'm starting to consider plan B. So what's the next best thing?

2 years ago 5000 bf was a container Edansaw was selling it here for $6.8 or so a bf, so you can figure wholesale will be less. shipping was about $4500 +- we split our load three ways and well that is never easy we had really good people to deal with but logistics was a nightmare.
Call Edensaw in PT they will know what quality wood is availible.
Another note on the wholesale wood, the moisture content was all over the place on the stuff we got. It is coming from the jungle after all.:)

Hello there, we're working on importing one or two containers Silverballi
into Holland for the restauration of our 1893 trawler Tara.
The rest will be sold and for that reason we're looking for people that
want to share their experiences with Silverballi.
The source is Guyana, the transport is planned february/ march.
Depending on the amount, we could ship a part of it to the US.
If you're interested let us know, at the moment we're not yet
shure about the price but will let you know as soon as there
are enough participants.
Meanwhile, if you have any experiences with Silverballi.
please let us know!
Taracrew.

In 2006-2007 I spoke with Ted Pike at Edensaw about getting Silver Bali. He said they'd gotten the silver bali for Martha from Brad but the next batch that came in was bad--and we looked at some of the "bad" silver bali when we were up in Port Townsend in 2007. Edensaw also supplied Martha with her planking stock--the same two loads of sapele in 2006 and 2007 that we used for our planking stock. Now, I suppose that when Ted said what he said, I could have misunderstood entirely...but...I dunno...seems like it went through Edensaw to Martha.

I've just been PM'd by a thoughtful forumite regarding this Silver Bali topic. I will clarify what I said as I don't want to put words in the mouth of our Edensaw contact :)
Above, I conveyed exactly my conversation with Ted--though I might have misunderstood something--which is why I said that in my second post. I suppose it is possible or even likely that Robert sourced the wood via Brad's DWV and that Edensaw shared the load or something similar and then later purchased their own container lot.
Such things would not be readily conveyed to another customer (me) as there is no reason to give the details when all the other customer is asking is if additional silver bali will be available "like" that which is on Martha...
Edensaw has been great in sourcing wood and being helpful to all in terms of such things. And, while I may have misunderstood the Silver Bali sourcing, regarding the Martha planking Sapele--I do know for 100% certain that came from Edensaw because our schooner had to wait, in the first shipment, for Martha to get what she needed from the lot before Edensaw could send down our planking wood. We're incredibly thankful that Martha happened to be needing some really long sapele because it gave us the opportunity to obtain the same lengths via Edensaw.
Won't comment further except to say that (1.) the Schooner Martha and her captain, Robert, are good inspiration to all who are restoring wood boats and (2.) Edensaw has sourced some wonderful wood for us at competitive prices.
Best to all :)
