You misspelled Wenches.
"Small-bottom action wenches." Where do I sign up for some of that action?!?

Interesting, but I can’t see using winches set up that way.

Nice one, Cap'n. I only got one question - which way is it worded? Small bottom, or bottom action? 'Cause I ain't down for that! (pun totally intended)

I've got four on my boat. You have to have an open cockpit with clear access underneath the side decks. I love 'em.
How do you know when you need wenches? opps I mean winches.
Would this rig require them?

It's the wench handles that are the tricky part.
Knowing when and how to 'insert' them and which way to 'grind' makes all the difference. 'Grind' the 'wrong way' and nothing happens at all.
Actually it makes the situation worse because you lose what you've gained.

I certainly don't doubt your experience. I just know there are times when I appreciate being able to get on top of a winch. For trimming smaller headsails though, I can see the charm in the application you describe. Thanks.
These winches are pretty much standard on the Folkboat. They're so practical, nothing catches on the handle, they're easy to use and you don't have to muck about taking the handle on and off as they're fixed in place.

These are almost identical to Sonja's winches. Keeping the handle on the bottom makes certain that nothing gets fouled on top. Many of the Swedish folks with square meters have gone to something more modern. They're a pain to get to and sometimes the handle falls off. I kept them because I can't afford modern, and I wanted to stay as original as I could. I'll look for a photo.

and on Dragons, the older 5.5's, 6mR's, etc. Just about any of the older classes that needed genoa winches had these.
I have two on my Dragon.
