View Full Version : Bailey plane
What please is a Bailey/Stanley plane? What does the "Bailey" mean? A friend of mine gave me a plane that belonged to his father in hopes that I may actually get some use from it. I am going to try to rehab it. As far as I know all it needs is a good cleaning....as far as I know.
It's a Stanley No.6. the sole is 14" long and says Bailey on the front. I think the sole is not perfectly flat. Thanks
Here's everything you'll ever want to know about Stanley planes:

I believe Bailey invented the adjustable frog that is used in the Stanley planes.

Don't worry about the sole not being dead nuts flat. My #7 has a slight "camber" to it and it seems to work just fine. It may be that it actually flexes down to flat with the pressure of planing.... Or maybe not...
Getting the breaker iron to sit absolutely tight to the cutting iron is the real trick, and it should also be polished and waxed to facillitate the shaving's escape from the mouth....

A #6 is 18" long. Unless someone cut it down. A #5 or #5.5 is 14 ". Cutter with #5 = 2", #5.5=2.375". As ACB states, Mr.Baily designs, Stanley manufactures.

I have a whole bunch of planes, including some high-falutin' ones. . .but the Bailey pattern planes are still my go-to tools, well worth the effort of tuning them up.

Arko, be warned that the estimable Patrick is a tool collector, rather than a user thereof.
I quite sure that he is also a user.
He is most definitely a vendor.
Here is his January too listing: http://www.supertool.com/forsale/jan9sale.htm
