No idea, but I can't say I much care for the wonky side abaft the port stern chainplate. That's weird.

Depending on the rig those plates could be for running backs....on a boat with narrow side decks that would be where I would put them.

Is the Captain talking about the backstay plate (how can you see that?) or what looks like a giant tumour behind the side stays? maybe it's just the light.
