but you just bought another useless import bandsaw....all Delta 14" except their anniversary additions are from overseas. That is why they are so cheap. Sorry, not trying to rain on your parade.

still way better then the ones sold by harbor freight. Nope, i'm happy. I've had very good support from Delta porter cable over the years also.

I have a delta 14" bandsaw from the middle 1990's. It's been a good saw so far although I haven't worked it hard. What year did Delta start making these offshore?

what prompted me to buy a new saw was the price. The delta sells much higher just about everwhere. The one I had was at least 20 yrs old and parts weren't avaible from harbor freight Carter told me they could retro fit guides but that would have been around 160 bucks. most import bandsaws sell for around or just under 400. Delta being the higher priced at 5-up to even 700. So, when I happened to be in Lowe's buying a pocket screw jig I saw the price on the bandsaw and did a double take. well today I brought one home!

There are several different Delta 14" bandsaw models.
It's confusing.

I bought a rockwell delta 14 inch bandsaw with the multi speed gearbox some years back from a guy in Prince Edward county. Complete unit, and it has the ability, with the gearbox to go down to 30 fpm...(steel cutting) $300.00

Great. Another tool snob. You people KILL me. I hate to be the one to break the news to y'all, but all import tools, which nowadays means practically ALL tools, are not junk. I've looked at the saw in question at Lowes and it looks fine to me. Almost identical, in fact, to my USA-BY GOD made one. Good for you Denise. Hope you enjoy your saw!

My kid called and said he had scored a Milwaukee 1/4" drill motor at a thrift store for 7 bucks. Way, way better than imported stuff.
It is really hard to beat old Merkan iron.

I've been eyeballing a Delta tablesaw at Lowe's. They seem to still make pretty solid tools. Glad you got a good deal.

I've seen the $369 price at several Lowes stores online. I'll be heading to Spokane this week to try to snag one. My 22-year-old Delta is still going strong in spite of years hard use, but I could really use a second saw in the shop.

28-276 is the model number the price turned the key for me! Not seen that model number that cheap anywhere. Yes it has the guides with "micro adjust" and the lower guides are quite beefy (for an import) and all the guides are made of steel instead of white metal.
She's in the basement wood shop now already dusty from some experimental free hand resawing of scrap wood! sorry about the sideway pic. duh. still learning photobucket.

and you can't quite see it back in the corner just left and under the window. the place is mess! stopped building canoes about 8yrs ago. now just getting back to woodworking in general in my 150 yr old house. so the saw is not just for my "gardner cartop semi-dory"

Not to be another old stick in the mud, but there are many 14 inch Deltas. My own saw, a Ridgid, is certainly no better than this new Delta (I like the Delta's stand a bit better, but prefer the Ridgid's overall finish and build) but it isn't precisely an under $400 saw you have to pay $700 for everywhere else. It is a 3/4 HP open base model. The $700 plus dollar saws (when all boiled down) have closed bases and higher HP motors. Lowes has always had the best price on this saw when they are carrying it, usually undercutting the next best deal by 40 or 50 bucks. Of course, you can always enjoy paying more for this tool if buying from a specialty shop.
I am not a tool snob, but there are differences in the furniture and features offered on the more expensive saws. I looked at this saw when I was last in Lowes, and it looked to be worth what they were charging. For similar money, Jet, and Ridgid make competitive saws with some differences in the details of how the guides are managed, and how the moving parts are manufactured and finished. It's worth shopping to make one's own mind up about what differences are important to the individual.
One nice thing; depending on when you buy, the Ridgid comes with a lifetime warranty. I've been very happy with mine; same price, slighly less weighty base, slightly nicer overall finish. Similar 3/4 HP motor. But I'm sure the Delta would work just as well for me. Probably made in similar plants out of similar materials in the same country. For $700 you get quick release, Carter guides, 1HP or more, closed base. This is not the same. Delta has been selling a 3/4 HP open base saw for under $400 for as long as I can remember. The US made ones were finished better, in my experience.
Congratulations on your new saw and enjoy it. It will repay you and was purchased at the best price now googleable, but it isn't a $700 saw.

Right on Denise! got yourself a new toy at a great price enjoy it.As for me I got a 10inch band saw at a garage sale,it is very old, the year is unknown its a Eaton most of it is cast iron and I have to get blades custom made(odd lenght),,wich is a blessing cause they cost me less than the ones in the store.I got it from an old lady who was clearing out her garage, she had that band saw, and a edging machine the brand was Beaver I threw that one away it was cast iron also and it had the same motor as the band saw. I didnt know how to use it properly and I figured that I never needed one before I wouldnt need one now.Got both of them tools for $25.00 Felt guity as hell but the old girl said not to worry, she had offered it to her sons for free they didnt want them, offered it to her neighbour, same thing. So sometimes you just get lucky, just like you with the deal you got on your new saw....Have a good one Mike

This is why I bought this saw at this price. it has the lever for quick change of the blades also. I never said it's a $700 saw. I did say I got it at a great price. I never said it's better, bigger, stronger, then anyone else has. It is what I wanted and what I now have. Anyone that wants my old "central machinery" band saw that needs new guides is welcome to it cheap or next to nothing! otherwise the motor is going on the jointer and the saw out to scrap!

it just pays to shop price on some things. that's all. One would think just letting others know of the lower price would be of interest. Obviously some of us would love to have a monster band saw like we see places like mystic seaport.. I think their's is like 20 ft high and has the ability to cut something like 30" logs! not to mention the Mast lathe they have too. a few years ago I resawed some 12-14" wide ash at the phila. seaport meuseum boat shop. woo hooo. that one was about 8ft tall!

Really? I think it's great that you're happy and I equally think it's a good value on a decent product but why should you get a pass on this? It's inaccurate information on a forum that is quick to correct such things. This is normally a $425-450 saw, and has been sold at Lowes on and off for about $375 for 15 years plus or minus.
When Lowes isn't featuring it for under $400, other people frequently are. Harbor Freight is junk, this isn't, but for $600 (never mind 700), this would be a rip off. It is perfectly reasonable to point that out for anybody else that happens along, and shouldn't diminish your joy our our heartfelt congratulations.

Any bandsaws come with roller guides are best bet....
I have issues with friction blocks... It okay for small/light jobs.... Get into heavy cuttings, blocks just burn away causing blade to twist outta line...

A fourteen inch saw isn't really for heavy work though you can do a lot with it. Saws in this category don't usually come with roller guides (the $800 ones are exceptions, fitted with Carter guides and quick release levers), except for the rear guide. I put cool blocks on my saw when I replaced the metal ones. I like them because you can dress them when they start to wear. I hit the limits of my saw from time to time and just have to figure out work-arounds for it, but life with my saw, which is pretty much a standard 14 inch like Denise's, is so much better than life without it that there's no comparison.
Of all the power tools I own, it's the one I'd most like to upgrade, not because it doesn't do what it does well enough, but because every now and then the throat depth or re-saw capacity is self limiting. But 99% of the time, it works fine.

hey Lew. well true. yet there are roller guides for it available and there is a riser block kit to make it a 105" instead of a 93.5" blade.
TerryLL
02-01-2009, 07:01 PM
One of the first upgrades I did on my saw years ago was to add the 6-inch riser to increase the throat capacity to 12 inches. I was resawing 6X8 red cedar cants into box blanks and the riser was a great addition. The longer blades seem to last longer than the 93-inchers. Still have the stock friction blocks, but have gone through several sets of bearings. All this talk about bandsaws makes me think I might need a bigger saw.
