On Sunday I had a long afternoon nap and woke up to find it snowing. It was the wet heavy stuff that takes out the power. Sure enough, the power went out at about 4AM. I didn't notice but Margaret did and we talked about what we'd do with our day. She was to volunteer at the local arts facility (The Opera House) and I called in to see if the boatshop was open. You can tell the power is out if the answering machine doesn't pick up, which it didn't.

But I was well rested and went in anyway to plow out the yard with the shop's truck. It takes about two hours to do it and by then the power was back on. The owner of the yard drove over to plow out and was pleased that it was already done. He pressed me to take the truck home for lunch and to plow put my own driveway. That way Margaret could get to the Opera House without doing alot of shovelling on her own.

I went back to the shop and made a set of floor timbers for a boat there. The shop was all quiet since I had it to myself. Just as I was winding up the day the power went out again (wind) and I got out before it became too dark to see.

So I don't have a snow day to make up, it was a good productive day (I even like playing in the snow!) and all is well with the world.

Meanwhile Margaret had shovelled and cleaned up all the plow-turned snow banks before tonight's freeze. Clever girl.

I have been doing some work to a couple of my boats here lately, pretty much by myself, and I admit to feeling pretty good about things when I get home in the evening, wind-burnt, a little sun-burnt, with a sore back and sore hands. It feels good to accomplish things.

Snow days. I am not exactly sure what that means, but I assume it's like a rain-out on a construction site. Your post evokes the feel of a quiet day spent doing something you enjoy at your own pace. Sounds nice.

OT-Dave, there is a Penguin listed in the 'boats for free' section of the magazine this month. I will call him tomorrow night, and if he still has it available I will go get it and bring it here. I am going to build a lean-to off of the storage building and set it up there to work on it. The boat is in Gainesville, which is about six-seven hours from here. I can do it in one hard day (drive there and back). He says she has her spars and sails. My wife couldn't very well veto a free Penguin. She still says that I will never use it, but my idea is that it's a boat that I can take small people out on one day, and eventually hand it off to them. In my fevered brain I see a series of these things with grandkids reaching back and forth in them.

I'll let you know if I get it.

Dave, you sound like you are a content man these days. That is great. I know I enjoy my work when I am bumbed that it is a snow day and there are few kids in the shop, usually one wanders in to do a little project. I wish more had the enthusiasm to do this but we're working on it. After a whole week of winter break I was psyched to get cracking on boats with the kids. Tomorrow will be great, still in the early weeks of a new crew doing composite boatbuilding in Brunswick. Snow days are quiet, but they don't come close to a sunny day on the coast!
