Saturday things were busy down at the Kalmar Nyckel shipyard so I shot a little video. All sorts of nautical stuff going on getting the ship ready for another season.

You warm up pretty quickly. What I didn't get a shot of -- because I was actually working at the time -- was moving those yards around the, welll, yard. You get a line of 12 or 15 or more people to lift the yard on their shoulders to carry them here and there. Looks like a huge caterpillar. Pivoting is interesting if you've never (like me) been in a marching band. That's how we got the foretop yard down on the dock -- it's good for some pretty heavy stuff, but not that main mast. We'll have a crane in for that.

Great, great stuff. Do you put the new guys on the windlass? :D

There's definitely a line of development in the tasks people get assigned. Chipping rust and scraping off old Penetrol? Newbie work for sure. Windlass, same deal. But it's not all like that. Some first-year crew are surprised to find themselve on the helm, even if they've never steered a boat before. (And this is some helm, a 5-foot-tall whipstaff. And you have no view forward. Just a lot of orders from the con up on the quarterdeck, which you also can't see.) On the flip side, anyone who sticks around a few years and wants to learn how to do seizings etc. is welcome to learn it.
