Yar-Bee-Garr!!...While traveling on the road to escape the deep cold of the Dakotas for a while before sailing season, our ship's parrots have given birth to two fragile but gorgeous babies!....The parrots LaFitte and Rose(H.M.S.), Solomon Island Eclectus, have two babies, 7 and 10 days old, respectively..We are ecstatic to say the least...Eclectus have the advantage of being able to sex by color, so in five weeks or so we'll know their 'persuasion'...More news when I can post..we have some pictures, but they're not online to post, and I have really slow speed due to our location, hiding out in the desert....

C'mon find them - Eclectus are beautiful birds. We only have them in Queensland here, and I've seen them in New Guinea.
Bit noisy though, aren't they?
it was a toss-up for us between an African Grey or an Eclectus. We got the Grey because of the bigger volcabulary and the less restrictive diet.

For the record, we had African Greys before Eclectus, and Eclectus talk every bit as good as Africans, and they do it in a sweet voice. Their diet isn't restrictive, they love stuff like peppers, which has beta-carotene for their colors....

Our African (female, 'Maui'), had over a 500 word vocabulary, and could ring and answer two telephones at once(really bizzare!)..Unfortunately, she made a quick escape in a fluke of two opened doors on a fall day. Into the woods, and had too much fun to come home. Too many predators in our woods...We switched to Eclectus for several reasons. In our lives we have had many types of parrots, noteably too many noisy conures when living in Alaska....The Eclectus are a colony breeding bird. Simply put, they don't bond particularly strong to any one mate, therefore they like most all humans. We had to go with this trait since our birds are such a large part of our Tallship activities, with many strangers coming and going during festivals...The chicks are doing ell, at 14 and 11 days respectively. The older chick holds its head up well now, and the other is trying to catch up...small dots where the first down feathers will emerge are showing on both, making them not quite so 'nekkid' now..Amazingly, LaFitte, the male, does all the eating for four; himself, and he feeds Rose, and she feeds the chicks.....a real eatin' machine at present, says I!

An update on the Eclectus babies, which are close to four weeks old now...The older baby is showing red pinfeathers, making her a girl......here's a link... http://s695.photobucket.com/albums/vv319/Royaliste/

The chicks are doing great now; they are fledged, (they fly all over the darn place at present!)...Lucy and Cleo are their names here, and we'll keep 'em around until the right families come along. We changed around part of our living room with a pile of screen doors, giving them an aviary of sorts....

C'mon, we want photos....., incidentally, I think the wild Rainbow Lorikeets have hatched eggs again. I've got a nest box up in the back yard - only about 9' up a tree. There were still 2 eggs last saturday, but we are getting plenty of noise now.
