We'll be in Vero Beach, Florida, the first weekend in April. Are there any things near there that would interest a wooden boat fanatic? Anyone need a crew?

Yes ...

- Rita's Italian Ice ... 601 20th Pl, Vero Beach, FL 32960. Try the custard.
- Vero Beach Book Center ... 2145 Indian River Blvd, Vero Beach. Cultural mecca of this little town.
- Ocean Grill ... 1050 Beachland Blvd, Vero Beach, FL 32963.

About a decade ago, I lived in Vero Beach for a couple of years. I enjoyed it a lot.

As far as wooden boats, I dunno ... I'd be tempted to tell you to wander the Vero Beach City Marina (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/8164803), or the Fort Pierce Marina, near the inlet. Either way, enjoy the sun.

Like most people down there, I had a plastic boat back then.

Yeadon pretty much nailed it.

My parents met and married in Vero and IIRC my grandfather built a place there (on the Riomar 'barrier island') in 1921 before there were bridges. Same for my mother's father. Sometimes there are really elegant boats at the Riomar Yacht Club (?) and I'd wander the docks looking at them, for example:

A shallow draft, jet drive, Goetz-built power cruiser (wood!)

I fear the place has become a condo development now.

Between the Indian River [?] and whatever else that is, Vero / Stuart has an unbelieveable amount of beautiful water. I would seriously consider renting a boat and toodle around - chart in hand. If it's a family thing, rent a pontoon boat. No one knows you ;)

Dave's daughters both live there with their families, and some day when my hair is blue instead of red, I'll likely end my days sitting on a balcony in one of those condo developments. Did someone say BINGO??? :D

On the other hand, a mere 2 1/2 hours north is pretty white yawl that some of us know and love. :)

Margo,
I would love to visit you and Sarah sometime, but this is a quick trip with the in-laws.
