I went for a hike at Napatree Point in Watch Hill, RI, and came across a harbor seal lying on the beach.

It appeared whiter than the ones I have seen in the past.

Didja club it!? :D
I saw a few of them last summer... Maybe now that the sound is cleaner than it was a few decades ago, they'll make a comeback, like the salmon...

Seals are common in the Sound in winter, even as far west as the Bronx. Generally they are very shy, but can be seen on the beach early in the morning. I've seen many on rocks while canoeing.

How about this seal spotting. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29722684/

This Harp seal was in the Saugus River, just north of Boston. Now, for anybody here familiar with the Saugus River (I grew up next to it) it's no place for a Seal! The River empties out to a trickle and the mud is very deep. This is almost as strange as the manatee we had on Cape Cod this summer. Wildlife that was once never around is suddenly showing up. We even have otters on the Cape now. http://www.capecodonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090309/MEDIA0302/90309016

Around here the longer they are out of water the whiter the fur gets as it dries... up to a point of course. :D

In your blog, you asked about the schooner Spirit of Massachusett a school ship in the fleet of three at Ocean Classroom. They also own Westward and Harvey Gamage: http://www.oceanclassroom.org/

The school's main offices were in Watch Hill until last year when they moved here.

Sometimes I have seen them on rocks off the Norwalk, Greenwich, and New Rochelle islands, but that was always from a distance.

Not too many sea mammals look back at people with curiosity... and we love the attention!

If seals curled their lips and spit at us it might be a different thing.
