Well glory be, there's a "Sailor's Brother" on the forum. Speak up Andrew and tell 'em about yourself. (I edited my profile to say that I now have a son so you can quit pestering me about that):D

Well Daniel, I guess first I have to figure out how to use this thingy... while I've lurked a lot in the background of furums... never joined one..
So, yes, I'm Dan's brother (or Sailor's Brother if you prefer), the one who has built a boat already (ok so a canoe, and it only took me like 15 years to finish, but it's done). Even though I have a new baby (9 mo), and a wife that's gone for the next 11 months or so (Fighting overseas with the US army) I've started building another boat.
It's going to be a Shellback, why? as Daniel has pointed out to me, it's not going to be pushing my skills all that much, but I think this time that's the point. There will be lots of learning of course, but a somewhat "simple" boat, that I can build in my VERY limited workshop (lots of toys, all cramed into a 15x6 room) in less than 15 years! actually ideally it would be nice to have it done for the better half's return... (that's when I convince her we need a cruiser since we now have a dink for it).
At some point when I get beyond lofting the stations... I'll start a thread on it... in the meantime... I have pencil lines on a piece of plywood to erase... (don't ask!)

Welcome, Bro, from another forumite in Victoria. ;)
So, ok...I'm confused...are you 2 guys really brothers, or is this just a log-in name coincidence?

Hey, my brother built a Shellback too, and it came out great. He's very happy with it, uses it mostly for a singlehanded sailboat that he can just throw in the back of the pickup truck for a quick afternoon jaunt. We've also used it as a tender, towing it behind my bigger cruising boat once in a while. I suspect you'll be pleased with yours too.
Welcome to the forum!

nope not a coincidence... Daniel's my real brother... (there are a couple other brother's kicking about there too)...
If you don't believe me, quizz me... I'll tell you whatever you want to know about him... wanna know where he last got seasick?
LOL
(don't worry Daniel, those boats get the best of many people...)

thanks...
So did he glass the bottom? that's my current "big question" do I glass the bottom? and what kind of weight does that add... all I've got is a 10 year old cavalier and I'm not sure about a glassed on on the roof... (for stupid I reasons I can't drive the wife's truck in this country without her in it!!! Canadian customs are not here to protect us, but collect GST and import fees!!!!)

He put a layer of 6oz cloth on the bottom only, wrapped around the chines by an inch or so, just for helping protect against scraping on the barnacles. That's plenty--you don't want any more weight than that.

that sounds lik a good compromise... any idea how much it weighs? the building guide says about 100lbs...
