Hello all. First time posting. I was out in Morwellham Quay England two weeks ago looking at Alert (Disappointingly just had been sold). Builder Will Stirling turned me onto the book “King’s Cutters and Smugglers”. Now looking for inspiration for our own smugglers of the time; I’ve been after any information on John Handcock’s sloop Liberty. Famous for being caught and impounded for smuggling Madera 1768. A lot has been written, but has anyone done a replica, model, drawing or even a painting? I’ve done the usual google and library searches, but no images. Can anyone help?

Maybe Chapelle's The Search for Speed Under Sail, 1700-1855 or the "Nautical Research Journal" by these folks - http://www.thenrg.org/.

Wiley,
Thanks for the suggestions. I have purchased Chappelle's book. Searched the NRJ high and low with no such luck. Maybe per Chappelle's "What models NOT to build" Liberty falls. Still hoping there is something out there.

The Search for Speed Under Sail, 1700-1855 Just Received from Amazon. A must read for anyone interested in what really makes your boat go. "Liberty" was not there, but the history of sloops and their design gives me a good start.
