For any of you NW folks who'd like to get some sailing in - this event is coming up on the 28th & 29th... though lots of folks'll be there getting set up on the 27th, I suspect.

The location is Dexter Reservoir. Good sailing lake. East of Eugene, Oregon, about ten miles out Hwy 58 from I-5.

Membership in the Western Oregon Messabout Society (aka the Ol' Coots) is self selecting. Our motto is: No Fees; No Rules; No Doorprizes. Heck, we even let Thorne in... so you see how slutty we are ;) So all you really need to do if you're interested is show up. Or... for more info - ask away.

For me, it'll be a bittersweet weekend. This is the last chance (for a long time) for an outing with my oldest son. He is - as I've mentioned here before - heading into the Navy about a week after this soiree.

Lets see, what did Groucho Marx say about any group that would accept him as a member???

;0 )

Can't make it up that weekend, so you guys drink a few cold ones for me, OK?

Real friendly bunch o' folks, those Coots. Below is a photo my Twin took as they drove away from Timothy Lake, leaving me all alone in the rain...

So be sure to hide some beer for your own consumption after they leave ya.

That is a sad photo, Thorne. Lotta Coots were down here for the Fisher Poets Gathering end of February; nice to meet the horde. Great group!

Sad HELL! He just put on that long face for the foto. As I looked in the rear-view mirror, he was dancing a jig - as he lined up beers on the picnic table. We'd unwittingly left him alone with the total remainder of the booze  Our loss :( I'm just glad the ol' souse made it home ok ;) Just kidding, of course. Thorne was the soul of propriety and good judgment during the entire weekend - except for that one lapse in good sense, where he took me aboard as crew - headed out into a gale :p Though... thinking back... maybe I served more as a dodger than as a crewman. He certainly wouldn't let me touch anything. Hmmmm...

Ballast, me boyo, I needed ballast to weather that wind!

And considering we never put up the mainsail, just limped along under my smallest jib, it wasn't too harrowing of an experience, now was it?

I do make mighty ballast, but I also thought I did yeoman's duty as a dodger. You were a lot drier than I at the end

As to harrowing... given the rumours, I had me heart in my throat from the get-go. I was afraid you were gonna be as crazy a skipper in a blow as your ballast is. But you were quite sedate. Lulling me into a false sense of security, eh? :p

How about it?? No (non-Coot) NW sailors who want to get the Spring started off in a fun fashion? Most just come for the day Saturday, but there's a few who'll be there both Saturday and part of Sunday.

What did he decide to do? Either it's slipped my mind , or I missed the post thread about the final decision.

I'd love to make it to a Coot's season opener (or any other event) but not this year...

I should pencil it in on the calendar for next year... Coot's Opener, Late March (only I should mark the January page so I can plan for it)

I am planning to attend the Big Lagoon Messabout :)

since i am a coot and a nasty one at that; I'll put it here as well any folks need ballast. the kids have the umiaks for the weekend and my wife and i would like to go i have to be a bagger on the river bank on this one. unless some one would like to supercharge the sampan build it wont be done in time. (had some other stuff to take care of and didn't get the boat done in time). grrrr.
