View Full Version : Spring has sprung, Projects need to get done.

Sring is in the air and a boys fancy turns to ........... boats of course.

So here is some of the spring projects I have to get to on Tidbit.

#1 the rub rail on the starboard side was crushed and bashed when we docked one night at a river front cafe.

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m320/fosterhere/Tidbit/IMG_0841.jpg

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m320/fosterhere/Tidbit/IMG_0843.jpg

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m320/fosterhere/Tidbit/IMG_0844.jpg

The problem is complicated by the fact that I do not have a shop anymore. So I'm perplexed how to attack this. Initially I wanted to totally replace the entire length of rubrail, it's only 17'

But now I'm thinking the down and dirty dutchman might be a way to go. So how would you guys attack this ?

I also need to find some plastic ( yes I said plastic ) battens for the sail, because the wooden ones keep breaking like toothpicks.

The rest of the work is cosmetic, varnish, paint and bottom paint I do have to attack the cockpit varnish and paint

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m320/fosterhere/Tidbit/IMG_0500.jpg

Also I got to get to the block's and running rigging one of these seasons.

Looking forward to this fun soon

I told you last year to give me the dimensions you need and I'd whip one out for you. Full length is the way I'd go, but if you want a Dutchman I'll do that too.

Your local sailmaker should carry both ash and fiberglass battens or can order them from Bainbridge. You can find some sizes of fiberglass battens, sold by the foot, at Sailrite online. Don't forget the end caps.

Joe , you sure you can read a tape measure???

#1 Either the camera angle is very bad or that piece is 3/4" , it sure looks thicker than 1/2"

#2: Looks to be net 1" and that camera angle isn't off that much to make me read that piece as net 1 1/2".

You'll also want the length about 18' you can cut that to fit on site.

Good luck Lefty:D

Gotta make a new rudder and tiller for the bleach bottle.

Trailer gets delivered next week, so I need to get that assembled and modified to hold the mast.

Lake is still frozen solid, and there is still 2 1/2-3 feet of snow surrounding the boat, so I still have a little time.

If your going to replace the whole length, (17'?) or a section and its the same for its length, why not cut out 6" or so and mail it to him?

Thats the best way to do it.

Sure Joe I'm involved as any of us here.

It'll be a hoot to 'watch' you work on this. I aways enjoy your 'work' threads , and a lot of what I add is constructive / good advice.

The thing I like about your threads is you take 'most ' of what said and use it , or you laugh at yourself if / or what ever one 'fits'.

I still don't think that camera angle is off that much on the 1 1/2" piece / photo #2.

Good luck

Joe,

Scarf a piece just a bit larger in profile and use a plane and chisel to match the profile. Looks like a simple round over. Make a template and plane to size.

Easy skill to learn.

Rubrails are often tapered...

paladin
03-21-2009, 04:59 PM
Rubrails.....first ya needs a 42 foot long teak 2 x 4.....stand it on edge, and using the saw blade make two passes down the middle to cut a drip groove about 3/8ths of an inch deep and 1/4 inch wide....then lay the 2 x 4 on it's side, and remove a wedge shaped piece off the "top" of the board....about 5/8ths of an inch at the top and cut at an angle (tilt the saw blade) to the lower edge....bolt in place using 1/4 inch bronze bolts, use teak plugs to hide the bolts.....

Nice Lookin' boat Joe,

For all the millions of posts you've made, I've never seen photos as good as these.

Hey, quit wasting so much time on the Bilge and take better care of that boat! She deserves better!

Give some gorgeous "After"shots if you can fit them into your Bilge agendas......:D

We've only had a day that felt like Spring had sprung. I stopped at Shop Rite to day to buy a box of warm weather, but they didn't have any.

Irony is that in three weeks or so, we'll likely be complaining it's too hot.

Well we are going full tilt on refinishing our spars, blocks and other small stuff. Our plan is to wood the decks, cabin trunk, combings, etc.. Using our new ceramic paint stripper, thanks to Steven Bauers design. Haulout scheduled for 23rd or 24th of April.

Beds weeded and turned? check

Mulch down? check (splurged for hemlock- but no new plantings this year)

Window trim, soffits and facia painted? check

Garage cleaned? check

Car cleaned and detailed? check

House finally under control- now that mamma is happy on to Chatham and working on List Best: Bottom paint, varnish and general messing around and getting in the crew at Pease Boatworks way. Did order a special gift for my Dad- the Festool sander/ router/ saw/ vacuum system to help work on the new launch. A long overdue Xmas, birthday, fathers day gift. He starts radiation next week (with a good prognosis), but with some boats to work on and some new toys, looking forward to some quality father/ son time- too rare lately and with me possibly relocating further south it will be even more valuable.:)
