Understand that this is not a "sympathy" post. You didn't know these guys and I never met them "in the flesh" so the usual expressions are unnecessary.

On St. Patrick's Day, Charles "Bud" Brewer and Gary Sessions both left on their last cruises. Bud died of a sudden, massive heart attack at his home and Gary died after a long struggle with cancer.

These were two of the most respected and knowledgeable knotting experts in the US, and indeed, in the world. Bud, in particular, had nearly thirty tutorials posted on the KHWW site and Gary had for years been the "go-to-guy" for anyone wanting instruction in the more intricate points of knotting and fancy-work.

My point here is that they're both gone, and with them all that skill and knowledge. Sure, we have some of it left behind, but no-one will ever again get a small box in the mail with an un-looked-for gift of a magnificently-turned stainless spike or pricker from Bud, or an email from Gary which in three short sentences completely clarifies what you were trying to say with ten paragraphs.

Guys and Gals, if you have a store of expertise or insight into something esoteric or plebeian, DO write it down so that it's not lost to posterity. The depth and breadth of knowledge on this forum is staggering and needs to be preserved.

Sorry if this is a bit disjointed or you consider it jejune, but it's something that needs to be thought on, and sooner is better than later.

Bud was supposed to visit me in April and was starting to hint he might not be able to make it back East at that time. I told him that if he didn't, I'd never speak to him again.

Self-fulfilling (and deeply regretted) prophecy.:(

Thanks for letting us know Vince, and sorry for your and our collective loss.

An aside, I learned a new word from you.: "jejune"

What Hwyl said, Vince.

I am thankful they imparted much of their expertise to you and so many others like you. It will live on in you, and be passed on to the next generation. It is not all lost....

Condolences and have you started writing it all down?

You were lucky to have their advise.
Shoes that can't be filled.
My idea of Heaven, is seeing again all the great people who were an influence on me during my life, who have passed before me.
A thoughtful post Vince.

Thanks all...

Chuck, I have indeed...that's what the tutorials page is all about...as I remember 'em, I make a photo-tutorial and put 'er up there.

Now, referring to the proverbial kitchen utensils, what about you?

Momentary Thread Drift ALERT!
A personal question, prompted by your sense of humor and way with words...
What was your pre-retirement profession?

Sorry to hear about the passing of your friends and mentors Vince. Our only gift in life is our time, problem is, no one knows how much they have. John

Sad to hear Vince. As we go through life we all loose friends and soon enough it will be our turn. My condolences nevertheless.

My sympathies to you Vince. It is well that they have passed on some of their skill and knowledge. At 66 I've begun to loose friends too.
I have a 92 year old aunt, when she goes I'm the senior member of the family. Gulp!!

Retarded? Who's retarded? I'm still just trying to get by with the minimum amount of effort....

Sales. Sold Electrical supplies to National Accounts (Godiva, Sam Goody, Spencer's Gifts.... little guys like that). They'd send a set of plans for the store and we'd ship the entire suite of electrical components per specs. Saved them having to sue contractors who'd use a $10 item in place of the specified $100 item. Did that for 20 years.

Before that, trucker, auto repair, deckhand, if it made money, I did it.
