I remember another news story several years ago. A couple sailing 75 miles off the Australian coast saw what turnd out to be a dog in the ocean. Brought it onboard, it went down below and being "dog tired" went to sleep.

I am worried about my own doggie..
He ain't a water type of dog.. and he will not go outside in rain, or step in water puddle..
I have to baby talk to him in order to give him a bath..

So, he ain't a boat doggy :( It scares me thinkin' about it..

Yeah. My pitbull has the natural buoyancy of say... a rock :( so we're just not even going there. We had the last one out a few times, but just walking down the floating dock freaked her out. She'd rather go with us and be miserable than be left behind, but it just wasn't fair to her.

Besides, I've got plenty of friends with boat dogs! :)

Maybe one day HR will bring Storm and Zephyr back for a visit. :D hint hint ;)

Each to his own but I've read so many cruising stories where the pet doesn't make it - I get depressed each time I start one of these stories and find they're taking a cat (usually) or a dog because I know that the cat or dog will either disappear overboard, die of some disease picked up along the way or die of some genetic problem having just endured 8 months crossing some place entirely unsuitable for these animals. I think it's nice to take pets out sailing for the day or even two but, forgive me if I have the balance of cruising survivors vs non-survivors all wrong, I think it's a depressing mistake to take them cruising! “We searched well over an hour,” Jan Griffith told the Brisbane Times.I don't know about any of you other dog lovers but if Lucky fell overboard I would spend a lot more than an hour looking for him. I know he would spend more time looking for me.

BTW Lucky loves sailing, never jumpy always relaxed in all conditions. Phill's little dog Walker has hit the drink jumping around, but he's easy to fish out. :)

Quite possibly Joe has found the perfect sailing companion. :)

Our dog is a bit skittish in the boat, and usually, we do not take her out. She always like she is ready to bail, and she probably would if she spotted ducks or loons.

She can swim but the thought of trying to haul 117# of frightened dog back over the side is not something that I care to contemplate.

What are the relative benefits of dog PFDs?

My dog loves the water but tends to freak out a bit when she can't feel the bottom.

I'm always nervous having the dog on board Aggie. Bailey is a great swimmer, and she loves the water, but she doesn't particularly like the motion of the boat. She took a slide off one time in the bay and started swimming for shore instead of back to the boat.

Those life jackets must be terribly hot and uncomfortable in the summer. What about one of these?

I have no idea of the reliability of these, though. At least people can manually inflate theirs, if conscious.

Bailey looks to have some Pit in her, wheres Yuffy is Boxer/Lab. But all told, I bet they'd make some pretty awesome puppies together, and look quite like they are from the same tribe!

He's an unhappy boater (we do have the life jacket) who suffers motion sickness, and not well. Sadly, we can't boat with him unless we want to afflict him, which we don't. The kids are happy to watch over him when we're gone, so no problem. The cat doesn't mind the boat, but I mind the cat, so she stays with the kids, too!

Bailey is a mutt; everybody seems to have a different opinion about her heritage.

I have a friend who, unable to clearly label their dog, manufactured an imaginary breed, gave it a detailed European backstory, and began proudly declaring this rich, phony heritage to anyone who asked about the dog! We've been thinking of doing the same.

those dog's PFD .. great idea...
The best part of the one we got Bailey is the handle on the back of it. I actually grabbed it with a boathook to haul her back the time she headed for shore, and the handle is equally handy for hauling her soggy butt back on board.

Sasha wasn't afraid of the water...when Sweet Thing went into the pool, then Sasha would invariably jump in also...

Carl,
Our dog is pure bred mutt. Finest kind. He's the best animal that it has ever been my pleasure to spend time with. I appreciate your sentiment and offer a toast to mutts of every stripe everywhere. Here's to irrevocably mixing up the gene pool! And, no reason to confine it strictly to canines.

If there's any commotion topside, the ship's dog generally goes below.
