Is there anything else on the market that works like Deks Olje #1. I used it for 25 years with superior results and have not find a good subsitute.

Varnol.

"VARNOL is a traditional Norwegian Varnishing Oil. Half varnish, half oil. The best of both worlds - a beautiful oiled-wood finish, or a hard-wearing high gloss - both from the same can! It is designed to be easy to use, and easy to maintain, without too many rules and regs… Whether you are trying to beautify and protect the bright work on your pride and joy, restoring antique furniture, or simply want to perk up and re-finish some old floorboards, let versatile VARNOL give you a hand!
The VARNOL formula, based on refined pine resins and gum turpentine (also called genuine or ‘raw’ turpentine), is designed to penetrate into the timber, not simply to sit prettily on the surface. The Norwegian makers of VARNOL have over 50 years of experience of specialist finishes for their harsh climate. These finishes must not only be easy to apply, but they must also be quick and straight-forward to maintain. VARNOL is the product of all this experience."

I don't know how much the shipping would be, but it might be worth checking.

Of course, you can mix your own with Petit's Captain's Varnish, Cold-pressed linseed oil and refined turpentine. The later two items should be gotten at an art supply store or reputable dealer. The boiled linseed oil we commonly see has been processed chemically and is not really boiled. Cold pressed is the type available through European suppliers and has a better character. Stand oil, as thick as molasses until extended with turpentine, actually goes through a polymerization process when heated. It is what the rennaisance painters used for their painting mediums. Extremely durable.
You may find some wonderful products at http://www.solventfreepaint.com (http://www.solventfreepaint.com/)

It's still on the market - in the UK at least. I also use it, with good results.

Isn't it a shame? I've had nothing but good results with Deks Olje #1 and #2 for twenty years, I use it mostly for spruce spars.
Just too much trouble for the Cetol crowd, I guess.
If I had a can of Cetol I'd offer it to one of them, for free. But they'd have to bend over for me, first.

September 2009 - I just found Deks Olje on line in the US at www.deksolje.com. While the picture looks like gallon cans, the containers are only 2.5L or about 2/3 Gallon. They also have Deks Olje 2. I was dissappointed in the container size, but it was shipped immediately and received in good condition
