View Full Version : Need a source for Deck Plate Blocks

Need something similar to what we already have-

We have a size 5 Merriman Deck Plate Block that was used for the mainsheet in the 1970's on our schooner--the other blocks for the main sheet were on a traveller rail (not a horse). We're going back to an earlier type of rigging the mainsheet with multiple blocks on deck and nix the 70's era traveler. That means I'm looking for at least 2 more but likely 3 more of this great block and deck plate combo.

They have a swivel version (which we have) and the write up in the Merriman catalog (2nd edition...effective 12/1/1970...) describes them like this: "allow a clear lead in varying directions but the block cannot touch the deck". They're figure 339 in that catalog. That may be the block model number too.

We can make blocks to match or use some of our other Merriman size 5 blocks but this block has a unique casting where it attaches to the d ring part of the deck plate. Also, the deck plate is very nice. I've seen something like this online somewhere but just can't recall where. The whole thing can't seem to be taken apart else we might do so and cast the parts but...seems like someone might have these or a new thing like these.

Screw plates are offered by the Port Townsend Foundry. This allows for one to choose their own block configuration.

Jay,

I'll check that out to see if they have a similar circular deck plate for the block.

The thing that I though was unique about this set up was the swivel attachment on the block itself which has a shoulder (see photo) that keeps the block up on the ridge on the deckplate and keeps it from ever falling over and hitting the deck.

Are there swivels out there similar to this? The deck plate by itself cannot do the full job.

Thanks for your help :)

The plates I am speaking of are set flush into the deck. They are of a diamond pattern and there is a plug that screws in flush or a ring that screws in for the block. A thump pad is needed to keep the block from banging on the deck. I prefer this set up as the blocks can be removed when not needed thereby giving a clearer deck to walk on. On custom order, the P.T. Foundry can make the pads you are seeking.

Thanks for clarification of what you're referring to. In this case, we have no need to remove the blocks from deck, but I get your idea about it.

I was hopeful that there is a deckplate/swivel combo out there that does what this one does. There is a local foundry here where we could get a custom plate made, I just didn't want to make patterns, etc.

Umm..."thump pad"??? what's that???

A "thump pad" is generally some fancy rope work, usually Flemish rope mats, that are made and placed around the block to prevent the block from pounding on the deck and damaging the deck or the block shell...
incidentally....that part is easy enough to fabricate from a couple of bronze rings and some flat 3/16ths or 1/4 inch plate....cut one ring in half, slip the second ring under it, then braze down the half ring....or drill thru the plate, cut the ring asymmetrically, push the legs thru the holes in the plate and braze above and below...leaves a captive ring and makes the block removable to prevent sticky fingers souvenir hunting...
