View Full Version : What are these? 6m's?
Here's an ad from the back of Australasian Post magazine from back in August 1956. The sail numbers indicate the boats are from Sandringham and Brighton yacht clubs here on Port Philip Bay.
Are they sixes?

Universal Rule S Class... Though why they'd put an S in an oil add, I don't know...

I'm happy to be corrected but I've never seen yacht club sail numbers or lettering. I think Salty's right - it may have been an exhibition of the different classes or just a race with different classes. Great photo! Rick

The only other class I've seen yacht club notations on the sails are Beetle cats on Cape Cod: W for Wianno, HP for Hyannisport, WH for Wild Harbor, etc.
Club sail numbers? Going clockwise 'round the bay here in Melbourne we have R for Royal Vic., H for Hobsons Bay, W for Williamstown, S for Royal Melb Yacht Squadron, B for Brighton, Sm for Sandringham (correcting my first post) and M for Mornington.
The photo was taken at the top end of a benign Port Phillip with Williamstown in the background, you can see the old Gelibrand light and the wool sheds on shore.
Is this still done there on Port Phillip Bay? I've never seen it anywhere else. Rick

Thanks! Shows how observant I'm not! I'll keep an eye out for these in future. Rick
