Doing some maintenance on the Perkins 4-236 and decided to replace a few hoses: wet exhaust, tank to heat exhanger, etc etc. Being a mechanic only by circumstance, I head over to the local auto parts store to buy replacements.

Nope.

No such thing as radiator hose by the foot anymore. If you can't give them a year, model and make to punch into the computer, they can't help you. Try telling the kid behind the counter that the hose you're looking for is for an old marine diesel engine.

Back at the boatyard they remind me that the local chandlery "has everything".

So I did what I should have done in the first place, and headed over to Wolf's Marine in Benton Harbor, MI.

The parts guy actually spent 45min locating and cutting the odd hose that I needed. AND talked old boats the whole time. If Wolf's served pastrami, it might be the only place I'd ever have to visit. Big shout to the good guys.

I've recently had a similar experience at Tripp's Boatyard, Westport Point, MA. They're good.

Mine or theirs? Wouldn't invest too heavily in mine these days... I'm like Helen Keller in the engine compartment. Everything by touch and grunts.
