...Anyone ever done one? Do you recommend it, any particular vessel / itinerary?

For my money, September is even better. Depends on how you feel about warm/cold.

I made only one on American Eagle from Rockland, 9 or 10 days in June ( Captain John Foss). Great experience, great poeple, Great coast, and .... Fantastic schooner ! Do it !

Fantastic Trip, My sweetheart and I went for a week on the French. We had a great time. You won't forget it.

Regardless of which boat you go on, you'll probably overnight in the company of 2 or 3 others most nights, so you can expect similar itineraries from the big players.
Personally, I like Angelique (http://www.sailangelique.com/index.html) because she's ketch rigged, but they're all beautiful in their own way, except for maybe Victory Chimes ;).

My wife and I sailed on Angelique in 1998 -- wonderful time. I highly recommend it. The signal cannon "battle" with Heritage was a particular highlight.
