View Full Version : Leveling fore and aft with rocker

I just flipped a Macomber 15 and installed the frames for the center thwart. That was easy because the thwart rests on top of the lap of the center plank. I want to install cleats for the forward thwart and need to level the boat(don't I?) The bottom is a flat run from about midship aft, but there is a slight rocker forward. How do I level this fore and aft?

eyeball??? No lie - sight along the boat and tweak the set up until it looks right.

Surely the plans show a level baseline of some sort? Or just set your level on a temp center thwart and extend the line forward.

From the photos it does look like it drops forward at an angle past the laps quite a bit. I'd be tempted to slant it aft just a bit to ensure drainage when in use or during storage.

Otherwise the eyeball suggestion above sure sounds like the way to go...

I would be amazed if the fore and aft vertical datum were not the same as the baseline used to set up the building jig.If you can establish the relative distances of the base of the stem and the underside of the transom, you should have something to work with. The alternative is to go with what looks suitable as a slight slope on a thwart should not make a dramatic difference to the performance of the boat.

On the plan, isn't there any waterlines or baseline?
Gotta have those to keep things level during construction..

Thanks all, the info WAS in the plans. I was way overthinking this, which is surprising because I usually way underthink things. Even if it wasn't in the plans Thorne was right about extending the level of the midship thwarts forward. If I can get my s#&t together, you may see this in the IBIM section of the WB show next month. Thanks for the help. I may need more.........
